    Hi,

I've spent the entire day going through the procedures in the READ & RUN ME FIRST post. I was not able to install and run SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, or ComboFox. I was able to run mbam and have attached the log. I believe I was also able to run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. I know I have Braviax and also Antivirus XP 2008. I continue to get pop-ups saying my computer is infected and I need to buy software. I also cannot use Google because some software does a "JUMP" and takes me somewhere else. Help please. Christina

You are a mess, so let's get you cleaned up. :)

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Yes, I know I am a mess, but honestly I am more worried about my computer right now. :-D

Anyway, have completed all steps requested and they appeared to have worked. Attached are the 2 logs. Thanks so much for your help!

Now after cleaning you up, lets get back to the computer....

We have four files that will not go bye bye.....

Can you download and run ComboFix or MalwareBytes now?

Are you familiar with editing the registry?

    We need to remove:
    C:\WINDOWS\buritos.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\karina.dat
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\buritos.exe

Let's boot into safe mode and try with avenger again.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

    Hi Tim,

Looks like we made major headway this time. I was able to run MalWareBytes and then ComboFix. Attaching the log files. Then I went into Safe mode and ran Avenger trying to delete the files you gave me and they were not there anymore. :)

The red cirle with white X is now gone and I no longer get the annoying popups. But, I think there is still something amiss. When I tried to log in to MajorGeeks on the initial forum screen it just hung up. I tried stopping and retrying but it would not accept it. I was able to get into the thread and when I clicked post reply, then it prompted for a login, that worked.

I also tried going to a few other websites and am having the hang up problem intermitently. Some things work and some don't. Everything seems to be very slow.

    Attached are the logs.

    Thanks, Christina

Now we need to check you system files...please go to start / run / type 'sfc /scannow' without qoutes and let it run twice ---> you will need your xp cd.

Tell me what problems you are having now. :)

    Tim,

I don't have a specific Windows XP cd. I have the Recovery CD that came with my Toshiba laptop. I tried using that and I get the message that it is the wrong CD. How do I get past that?

    Thanks,
    Christina

You are going to have to go into the recovery console.

Boot to the cd....When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.....When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password...... if the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.... At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following:
    expand d:\i386\beep/sy_ c:\windows\system32\beep.sys /y (enter)

Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart.

    Tell me if that works.
