I have a dell inspiron e1505 laptop and I'm trying to install xp on it. I put the install disc in and run it from boot up, the cd-rom reads the disc and the blue prompt screen pops up reading all the files on the disc at the bottom of the screen before it shows me the menu where I can , format or install a fresh copy of XP. The problem is it never gets there and stops working and the cd-rom stops spinning!

I bought a brand new laptop hard drive and it did the same thing. I have OEM License copies of XP and 2000NT and both operated and frooze up the same way, on my old hard drive and new one so it can't be the software.

Now the laptop is 1.5 years old and it was shipped to dell in the past for oem hard drive failure. The hard drive thats inside is number 2 and about 8 months old since the service was done with Dell. In that 8 months till no I've been having problems where I would turn on the machine and the screen would get to the xp boot screen with the logo and the loading bar in the middle moving left to right and it hangs up and stops, I though it would continue but it doesn't and the only way to fix it is rebot, Oh and I tried everything in safe modes and nothing works either.

I ruled out CD-Rom drive because it reads the disc in the first place and not the Hard drive because I just put a brand new one in and tried to install a fresh copy of Windows XP

    Does anybody have any Ideas??

Im wondering if its the motherboard or possible the connections that run from the motherboard to the hard drive or ROM instructions that just short ciruited or something?

    Thanks guys

    HI lotus welcome to geeks.

I think you should run a couple of tests to check the MEMORY and the HDD.....

MAKE SURE YOU BURN THESE TO CD's AND NOT DVD's!

This is a RAM memory tester you have to DL and burn it as an ISO so you can boot from it later...

This is the UBCD it has many tools on it including a fine HDD tester which you have to Dl and burn the same as above to boot from it later.

For testing the HDD you need to look for an option called " HDAT2" in "hard disk tools"

It might also be worth wiping the HDD which you can do with the UBCD aswell, be carefull though as some of the options are 35-passes and can take days to finish :(

There is a good opton called "@active killdisk" or something similar that does two passes of writing zeroes.
