So which files won't it let you access?
Or what are you trying to open that is giving you permission errors?

I just want to be clear. This is a completely new install and these are new files? They are not left over from your old installation--correct?

What is one item on your desktop that you can't access?

I haven't used XP in quite some time so don't want to over complicate this situation. Maybe someone who runs XP can give some help.

I can't see why you would need to take ownership of anything since it is a new install. So I don't think that should be an issue but am keeping it on the table for later.

So, after installation was complete, you created a new account which should have administrative permissions.

If you go to Start>Run and type in control userpasswords2 then hit Enter, in the window that opens does your user name have administrator status?

Download a copy of Ultimate Boot CD, I suggest you let TestDisk (included in Parted Magic) analyse the drive, TestDisk Step by Step.

While you're downloading and burning that to CD, I'd like you to get me up to date on this:- what happened, what you've tried, what you're trying to achieve. I'd like all steps taken and all error messages please.

All I see after a quick skim of the thread is that you had a boot problem and you've thrown random tools at it.

    EDIT: corrected download link.

But how did you get to this point? Tell me what happened, what you've tried, what you're trying to achieve. I'd like all steps taken and all error messages please.

Pongo, I don't think Win7 will work on that laptop. Not enough memory or HD space. Win7 keeps very large amount of undo information and will eat up most of the space within a year just for operating system files.

I know you don't want to hear this but because the install has problems right from the start doing a new install of XP might be your best option. I would hope the chkdsk that ran before the first install has fixed the HD problems so you won't have the original hang during formatting problem. [BTW if you do try a new install you should be formatting to NTFS but not using the Quick option.

I'm not sure what exactly you will be using the UBCD to accomplish. It is a set of diagnostic tools and won't install an OS. Do you have a plan for using the UBCD?

So which Operating System did the kids try to load?

  15. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

windows 7 they tryed to load and messed everythibg up...if i want to try and install another xp do i have to create a new partition..

  16. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

Windows 7 has a different type of NTFS filesystem, it also modifies the MBR in a way that XP doesn't 'understand'. This might explain why you're seeing files that you can't access.

Is there any valuable data on the drive that you'd like to try to save?

  17. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

no theres not.....im up for anything to work in this.

Satrow may have a better idea particularly regarding any remnants left over by Win7 that may be effecting the XP installation. I'm unfamiliar with those problems. [Perhaps using the Wipe Disk option in Partition Wizard would address any changes to the MBR that Win7 makes?]

If it were me, not knowing more than I do, I would insert the XP disc and when you get to step 6 in this guide http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx highlight the existing partition and press D to delete it.

You should then have unpartitioned space in the list of about 19000mb. Highlight the unpartitioned space and press ENTER. It should then create a partition and allow you to format. Choose NTFS but not the quick option. Still should take less than 10 minutes.

Then let it go through installation. Make a note if there are any messages about skipping files or errors during installation. You may have just had a bad installation I've had that happen.

    pongo Staff Sergeant

so delete all partitions and create a new one then try again..its just strange that yesterday i got xp in this thing but i can do anything with it...

  20. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes, it is strange and I am hoping it is just a bad installation. I've had bad XP installations that were just flukes of a file being missed or something because of a dirty disc or error copying a file.

It you want to be extra careful using the Partition Wizard disc to wipe the Hard Drive should eliminate any possibility of remnants from old installations. That writes over the entire HD making it like new. I'm unsure how comfortable you are with the PW program but if you were to wipe the HD you could be sure that nothing left over is interferring with your new XP install. It may be worth taking the extra 20 minutes.

all try that see what happens...i would also like to thank everyone for there help..:clap

  22. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

so i tryed a different xp pro copy...and the problem is setup formats the partition to 100% but always fails ...

  23. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Did you try wiping the disk with Partition Magic. It should be an option on the left hand menu.

  24. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

after i wipe it the Partition Magic do i have to create another with that program..do you mean partican wizard 5.2

You should just wipe the disk in Partition Wizard. Then Boot from the XP CD and try install.
No need to create a new partition in PW.

I keep stressing wiping the HD because it will write zeros to all sectors and should mark any bad sectors as unusable. That way when you try to install XP the installer should avoid any sectors marked as bad.

Hi pongo, when downloading illegal copies of operating systems such as windows 7, files will wind up missing in the majority of these copies, buy yourself a legit copy of windows 7, await the arrival of the dvd and it will install just fine.

  27. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

there more to it then that bro....i think the c drive may be messed.even if it is a pirate copy of xp it should install....this has been done a million times.

  28. avalanch

    avalanch Private E-2

When you load a cd or dvd from the bootmenu, the drivers from that disc are loaded, not any drivers on the C drive, so whatever you did, your disc is missing these files & giving these errors.

Also it doesn't matter how many times it's been done, piracy is illegal and these are the kind of consequences that can happen from using pirated programs.

even if i wipe the partition and create a new one...i have 4 different iso xp pro disks they all cant be bad.

  30. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

I am talking about writing zeros to the drive not just deleting the partition. You want to highlight Disk 1 in PW and write zeros to the whole drive not just the C: partition.

Doing that should rule out problems with the HD itself so if you still have problems installing XP it is because of a bad disk or possibly bad RAM. But bad RAM will usually give you file copy errors so I think wiping the HD is a good idea since it may be a bad sector that is causing all your trouble.

i downloaded this LinuxMint Iso (Live CD 32bit) do ya think i should try it or just retry the xp...

  34. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Linux Mint will run right off the CD. You can try it without actually installing it. Make sure you burn the iso file as an image not data.
You can always try the XP install again by just ejecting the Linux Mint Cd.

If you are happy with Linux Mint you can use the install option so you no longer require the CD but it will make later installing XP difficult because of the limited space on your HD.

I've never used boot and nuke. I think you can quit anytime. 1 pass is enough for what you wanted to do. Anything more than 1 pass would be useful if you were very rich and giving away your HD to an identity thief. Other than that it is overkill.

will Linux Mint allow me to run the laptop wireless...and the kids yous msn ect..

  38. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

It should be able to but I guess you'll have to enter the passwords.

Insert the CD and let it start. Don't hit the install button that is not what you want to do.

You will get a desktop in less than 5 minutes. The start button should give you an option of Firefox web browser start that and see what it says about internet connectivity. It may start a wizard to help you connect. You'll probably need your wireless password handy.

We really shouldn't be jumping around.

You have use Darin's Boot and Nuke correct? That does the same thing as zeroing out your drive. So since you have done that are you still having problems installing XP?

yes formating always fails...should i always format with NTFS.

Xp runs better on NTFS. And I think FAT limits filenames to a smaller number of characters something like 128 for FAT and 256 for NTFS.

But if it would format to FAT and install XP that would be OK. For what you want the laptop for it should be fine.

Maybe try creating a partition using Partition Wizard and format it in Partition Wizard and then only let the XP CD do a Quick format and see if that works.

*****The only other thing I can think of is if you can find the manufacturer of the HD you could download their bootable diagnostic utility to see if the HD has gone bad.

You need the chipset drivers for your computer. Most of the things you are probably missing are drivers for chips on the motherboard. Laptops don't have cards, they have chips on the motherboard to save room.
