cant install ram

Yeah i just ordered some some memory a crucial 512 mb stick , and when i try and put it in the memory module and start it up my comp beeps for about 5 seconds then i cant turn on my monitor , does anyone know what is wrong and how i can fix it , thanks.

 

Is it the only stick in there, or do you still have previously installed memory in there, too? Sometimes RAM must be installed in pairs. What is your brand and model computer, and what is the specific Crucial RAM part number you purchased? Did you let Crucial's memory selector tell you what you needed to buy (if you ordered it from them)?

 

there is another stick in there , it came with the comp , a hp pavilion 503w, that stick has 128 mb, im not sure of the crucial part number but on the package it says 512 mb 184 pin dimm 64Mx72 pc2100 ddr , i didnt buy it off crucial , but a store off ebay

 

OK, your machine has two banks of one memory slots. That means pairs don't apply. I would try:

1) Try the 512 alone in the first memory slot (may be called slot 0).
2) Switch the sticks so the 512 is in the first slot (0) and the 128 is in the second (1), since I am assuming you put the 512 in the empty slot and didn't remove the 128.

Also, "64x72" tells me that it is ECC, registered memory-- your system may not work with it mixed with a non-ECC, unbuffered 128, OR it may not work in your system.at all.

 

hey man thanks for your help , i tryed the stick in the slot i had my previous ram and it still does not work , oh well i need a new motherboard anyway

 

Try using just the new memory stick in the first slot, and not the older stick at all, that might work. Probably not, but it is worth trying!
