Can't install SUPERAntiSpyware

I am working on cleaning an XP system that I believe is infected at least with Virtumonde and Zlob. KVMSecure keeps popping up too.

When I try to install SUPERAntispyware, I get an error message saying that Windows Installer was not able to launch.

I was able to install SpyBot S&D and run a scan, which detected and tried to delete Virtumonde and Smitfraud. But I'm still not clean.

I'm thinking I should go to the specific procedures for Virtumonde and Zlob removal, but before I do I thought I'd check in to see if there is a way to get SUPERAntispyeware to install. Or if there is another solution I should use.

    thanks for the guidance,
    John

VundoFix will not help with the current forms of Vundo. Try running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware first and then see if you can install and run SAS. If not, see if you can install it in safe mode. If your still cannot get it installed, skip SAS and move on.

    Hi Chas,

Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it cleaned some files. Still could not install SAS.

I am now in Safe Mode and same thing. I am in under the Administrators account, but get an error that says , "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation".

Are there on-line scanners that might work?

    thanks,
    John

They may run but they may not find and fix your problems. If my suspicion is correct, you could have an infection that could block many things from running including antivirus programs. You may have a w32/Bagle infection. I need to see some logs to know more. Attach your MBAM log. Did you run ComboFix? What about MGtools?

I've run MBAM, ComboFix and MGtools. I'll send the logs tomorrow when I get home from work.
    thanks,

    Hi Chas,

I just wanted to close the book on this thread.
I was able to run a utility that fixed the Windows Installer error.

Once that was cleared, I was able to install and run SUPERAntispyware. Starting from there, I followed all the steps under your cleaning procedure, and all was clean and HAPPINESS.

Installed your recommended protection and gave the PC back to a very happy friend.

Thanks for all the hard work and great tools.

Actually, I think it was "Error Doctor", but I'm not 100% certain. It was already installed on the PC. It was late at night, I found it in the programs listing and decided to try it out. I was so happy I just rushed to install SAS and get things moving.
    thanks,
    John

Okay thats a registry repair type tool. While I'm happy to hear it help, I would be careful using tools like this. They can sometimes cause more problems. Especially if you just blindly fix everything they declare to be a problem.
