is MSN messenger installed on the pc? As part of Windows Components in Add/Remove Programs?

It will have a folder in Application Data under the User Profile Document and Settings, iirc... you could look for the information if it is uninstalled and delete the folder
then move to cleaning the registry for remaining bits...

    C:\Documents and Settings\<user profile>\Application Data\

be sure to set the folder options to be able to view hidden objects

the registry entries are going to be valid if the messenger is installed, it (messenger) is there so there would be no reason to remove any entries...

then the application data folder will have various things in it for applications, ;), look into the microsoft folder for messenger or something related to the IM app...

running ccleaner after all this is gone, it will get rid of anything still there,
also, ccleaner has a 'do not clean anything over 24 hours' or something in the advance or options settings, may have to untick this to 'force' ccleaner to 'see' what you have done to your pc, considering fresh changes are made to it...

edit: ** ccleaner, options, advance, top tickable box: Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours >> doesn't sound like this will effect anything you will have to do... ;)

More than likely you will have to change a setting from 'do not show' to 'show' hidden files and folders on your computer first...

"Folder Options" is found in the control panel, then click on the "View" tab, next scroll down looking for "Hidden Files and Folders" with a folder icon just to the left, next you will see two entries "Do not show hidden files and folders" (DEFAULT) and "Show hidden files and folders" -- no restart is needed and the changes are immediate. Not mentioned is selecting "Show hidden files and folders" then clicking ok or apply then ok :-D :p ;) :cool

After making this system change you will be able to see the Application folder mentioned before. Also, remember and not if you have the MSN Messenger installed on the PC, no mention was given referring to the program existing on the computer.

i did what you said and went to my application data folder > microsoft then deleted the MSN Messenger folder.

then i ran CCleaner. first i ran the cleaner then the registry cleaner. i tried installing msn again, but to no avail.

i had msn show up in my add/remove files list but i'm not sure why because it wouldn't open. i uninstalled it before i posted this thread.

I would suggest you first try to find an older version of WLM. Many people have reported having issues trying to load the newest version.

There should be an uninstall option for the current version in "add/remove programs"

In this case I would suspect a corruption somewhere. I suggest you run chkdsk sometime soon.
