can't load microsoft, or many other websites

i have just done a reformat on my computer, however i have run into a problem. i cannot update my computer via windows update now. i can't even get on any windows or Microsoft website, not to mention many others (malawarebytes, and superantispyware sites are also some not loading). All i get is a "Server not found" type error in both InternetExplorer and FireFox... i have XP Home (no service packs on it) I also can't do the windows activation. it IS a legal copy, so that can't be the problem. i can access the sites if i use a proxy website, but not directly.
if any more info is needed let me know.

Why can't you activate Windows?
What message do you get?
Do you have your activation key?
