Can't log in to XP after running Ewido

I am trying to fix my brother's spyware/virus infected computer via VNC. I just ran Ewido scan overnight per the instructions here. I ran it in Safe Mode. Now I had him restart and he gets the screen with his user profiles, but when he selects one it says "loading settings" then comes right back to the screen with the profiles again. I had him start again in Safe Mode and the same thing happens. He's using XP Home.

Any ideas?

Surely there's a better way than that.

 

This happens even with the administrator user?

If this is a virus causing this, you may have to plug the hard drive into a 2nd machine and scan for viruses to clean it up.

If not, than I think reinstalling Windows is in your queue.

 

For the record, I ended up reinstalling windows.
