Ok, so my boss from work gave me a Dell computer, "Optiplex GX520" and told me I could have it for my own use. The problem is, and I think this is why he gave it to me, that it is password protected. It's loaded with XP Pro and gives several options of places I could "log into" as well as a choice of several "users". For the location, I chose the one that said (This Computer) and tried to change the user name to administrator but it seems that it is pw protected as well.

I logged in in safe mode but same options. I logged in in safe mode with command prompt but same options.

I was going to use this computer for a small business but was told it's too old for that purpose so I want to allow my children to use it, but I need to get rid of the current users. I read in another post that recommended PCLoginNow but I'm not sure if that will work with XP Pro! Any suggestions?

BTW, I did press F2 on startup and entered "setup". It showed me Drive 0 was frozen! Now sure what that means or if it's a problem!

    Thanks!

The easiest would be if you ask the person who gave you the computer for the passwords.

The other option - aside from password hacking programs - is to reinstall Windows completely.

After reading other forums on this subject, I have realized that this is a sensitive subject and many might not want to provide answers to this question. I completely understand and apologize to MG if I put them in a bad position. So, I have decided to try and install my old hard drive on the Dell instead and let my kids run with that. Thanks!!!

Thank you for your response pwillener!

I always had a question about this procedure though, I have an install disc for Windows XP and an Install disc for Windows7. If I install either one of them on to the Dells current hard drive, will I not have issues with "activiation", since I already installed them on my current computers? Some say I should go out and buy another copy but I can't see doing that! I'm just upgrading my computer!

I haven't read this, but you might like to :-
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305, it's one of many articles on the MS website found by searching 'password recovery xp'
also try various searches on password recovery/ lost password etc on the MS website (tnclude xp in search else you'll get lots of references to Windows 7)

Thanks to you both for your input. I have decided that since this computer is older and a bit limited, I went ahead and started running live cd's of linux distros. After running several "minimal" distros, I think I'll install Ubuntu for now!

Years ago, I had a dual boot with windows and linux (mandrake), and had lots of fun playing around with the linux OS. I've forgotten everything about it so, I have a lot of learning ahead of me again!

Thanks again, you folks st MG's are on top of it!
