Can't log into Yahoo for days now!

 The title says it all. I can't log in to my Yahoo mail for the last couple of days. I contacted the Yahoo! Help people and they told me that it was something to take up with my Internet Provider. Can anyone shed any light on this? I have Windows XP and have had to install Windows a couple of times due to viruses (the husband loves his porno sites!! much to my dismay). An early reply from anyone would be very much appreciated.

After logging in, I get the page with this message: "Yahoo! - 999 This page is currently unavailable. Unfortunately we are unable to process your request at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please try again later."

This message is an actual page by Yahoo! I had problems before (the same message), then I ran Spyware, etc., problem was corrected for a week or so, until Thursday, but hubby was not viewing porn lately, so..... I also tried setting up another mail box in Yahoo!(successfully), but cannot get into that one either....

 I deleted all cookies, temp internet files, etc., (I usually do this every couple of days) and this still doesn't work. This is the only thing that I cannot access. Do you think that I will have to install Windows again?

ps. Thanks for replying so promptly on a Saturday night. I am new to this so please bear with me. Most of this is still very unfamiliar to me.

I ran the SpyBot but I still can't get into the Yahoo. What now?

I will sign off soon for today, but will check for your reply before I do.

A quick google on this error message suggests it's a conflict that yahoo has when an ISP uses proxies (they might have proxies transparent/invisible to you). One suggestion all around that seems to work about 80% of the time is to use secure login. Try logging in here: https://login.yahoo.com/

Hey, thanks a million - the secure login worked! You are great. Now, for the next problem, just last week, upon startup, the computer motor is making a noise and I have to smack it to get rid of it. My warranty expires at the end of this month. Do you think that I should take it in for a check up?

You got me there, I am curious. What goes on here? The problem is still there, isn't it?

    heheh

They might charge you extra if they knew you gave it a smack.

    Lot's of Bad Stuff

Seems to have found a lengthy list of bad things. One of them is the Google Toolbar. I downloaded this for the pop up blocker only. Should I remove it, and if so, what do you suggest I use for a Pop Up Blocker? (I just re-read your reply. How do I cut and paste the entire list, from the saved list? I told you I was new, really new!) Also, should I tick check all the files to be fixed?

When I press Save Log, I get the Save logfile window that takes me directly to my folders. There is no OK, edit or select all.

Am working on trying to figure out how to do this. Maybe I can e-mail it as an attachment? (I saved it in my documents folder).

How do I make certain that you are not trying to sabotage me? (Just kidding, I think). Many thanks and enjoy the rest of the day. I'm sure that I will find another problem soon, as I just keep digging deeper into this and keep clicking away.....

    Later. And thanks all, again.

Just one more question for today. Is there anything on the lhe list of downloads on the MajorGeeks web site that I should download also? ( I don't recall where I found the link to this great website. I stumbled upon it during my clicking spree while I was trying to fix my problem. Any idea where you think I linked to this?

No Problem Xflat didnt mind doing it but man she was really paranoid about stuff :)
anyway i agree i think her problem is probably ISP based but like you say if shes happy then thats good enuff

I wasn't paranoid about stuff. .. I was just kidding.... anyway, I know that I still have bad stuff going on and like I said, I am new to this, so please bear with me. If there is more to do to clean up my computer, please keep giving me the good leads and I will be more than happy to continue with this. I am a quick learner with computers and everything I know is self taught and trial and error. That's why the computer keeps getting sick! I have had to install Windows 3 times now. For now, I will download that link that you suggested. Anything else? And by the way, is ISP my Internet Service Provider? I'm new to all the lingo.

    General_Lee_Stoned BuZZed Lightyear

Its ok to be paranoid LOL :)
Anyway yes ISP is your internet service provider and as Da Chicken said i imagine the login problems are due to anoymous proxies being used not a problem if you just use the secure login

this is a good free application for cleaning out all your old temporary internet files etc its 5 star rated so its got to be good if you look on the link theres a nice review to show you what it can do

What is an anonymous proxy? Also, I am now running the HD stuff and it just told me that file c:\ce2c8c9dcdc980bb6097d63fa378e0/sp2 access is denied. I saw this folder and sub file earlier today and don't know what it is.

Secondly, Hdcleaner found 18 files: 2 SYD files, 4 File Folders, 3 BAK files, 3 GID files, 2 OLD files, 4 TMP files and 1 Recovered File. Should I get rid of these?

A proxy is a special kind of server. Basically, instead of simply routing and forwarding the requests you send out to the Internet, a proxy opens up the requests and then "pretends" to be you. Effectively, this makes everybody your ISP provides access to look like one massive single computer making zillions of requests to hundreds of pages.

There are a variety of reasons a proxy might exist. The primary one is security, but a proxy also allows your ISP to use more Internet addresses or control how you can use your account. They can more easily block illegal activites like certain file sharing programs, and so forth. As far as you're concerned, however, the proxy is completely transparent. It should have no effect on your ability to use the Internet, but in this case it might. Yahoo might limit the number of requests from a given host, and it might think that the ISP proxy is flooding it with requests so it blocks it.

It's hard to say exactly what the folder c:\ce2c8c9dcdc980bb6097d63fa378e0/sp2 is for. I'm assuming "sp2" is a subfolder? "Sp2" suggests it might be for Service Pack 2 -- updates that MS has released for Windows XP since Service Pack 1 was released. Even thought Service Pack 2 isn't out, they call all the updates since SP1 "service pack 2". Have you run Windows Update and not rebooted yet? "ce2c8c9dcdc980bb6097d63fa378e0" is a big binary number that, to me, looks alot like a registry key (it's almost long enough). It might be associated with a given update or something. Try rebooting and check if it is still there. If you have Show Hidden Files enabled, are there any files in the directory (or directories)?

As for Hdcleaner, if the files aren't very large (less and 10 MB) I'd just leave them. The .TMP files can probably be deleted with 99% assurance of safety. I'd probably leave the .BAK and .OLD files if it were me.

That file is probably a Windows Update, as I had an update last week. Anyhow, I was just clicking away again and found instructions from Windows to "Protect your PC - Windows XP" and steps to turn on the Internet Connection Firewall. So I followed the instructions and turned it on (it has never been turned on before and I wonder why no one told me to do so before). Can you explain more about this and how it will affect the surfing habits in my home?
