Can't login

I can't log into Facebook, Twitter, or Myspace along with other websites. When I try to log into facebook with my username and password, it loads another login page. I have logged into Facebook with another PC so I know its not the username or password. It does the exact same things for myspace, and twitter, it just reloads the login page.

I am running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, on an Alienware MX17.

I was able to log in last night, but after rebooting Saturday (10/16/2010) morning (just rebooted because it had been a few days since I rebooted last) I can't log in.

I am able to log into gmail, and Major Geeks now to post, but when I tried to create the account, it wouldn't display the captcha code, so I had to use another PC to create the account.

I am normally default to Firefox, but have tried Chrome, IE8, and Safari yesterday, to rule out a browser issue. I have also tried setting up OpenDNS to see if it was a DNS issue. I ran the Read & Run me first thread in the malware forums and everything came up clean, so they suggested I post here.

Have you tried doing a system restore?

Unfortunately, I haven't created a restore point since, I got the PC. Kicking myself for that now. I have an Ubuntu 10.10 live CD and have ran it, and I get the same thing with the Firefox that is on the LiveCD Ubuntu install. Which leads me to believe it may be to do with the router, or network card.

I am doubtful that it is either the router or network card since you can access other sites. Have you cleaned your internet cache? Perhaps you should run both CCLeaner as well as ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Ran CCleaner as part of the malware proceedure, but ran it again, and downloaded and ran the other link you provided. Closed browsers and ran both, and tried again, still reroutes me to the login page.

Installed Ubuntu (dual boot windows 7 x64 primary OS) and still getting redirected in separate partition/OS install. Not sure if this helps anything, but it is still redirecting.

Just found that it is completely blocking windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ comes up with a blank white page. Not sure if that would help narrow down what it might be.

So booting from Ubuntu you still get redirects?

Yeah. The only site I tested in Ubuntu was facebook, but it redirected back to a login page.

Right click CMD run as admin
    type ipconfig /flushdns
    that may help !
Are you sure you completed the R&R me First properly ?

Set your router to use the OpenDNS and retry?

This is a link to my post in the Malware forum. The only thing I deviated from was the fact that I already had SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes installed on the PC, so I just updated them and ran those scans. Otherwise I step by step followed the directions by having them open in another computer. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=224757

As for ipconfig /flushdns I have tried that, and I have OpenDNS set up on the router as the DNS to use, and set up in the computer as well. I am at a loss as to what it might be. I keep contemplating reformatting and installing Windows 7, but I have a similar problem at a PC at work, that was running Windows XP and when we reinstalled XP it still doesn't connect (thought the work PC the only page I tried was the windows update webpage). Hence, the reason I tried that yesterday at home to see if it was doing the same thing. The work PC and home PC have not been in contact with each other. No USB thumbdrives or any such software contact.

Can you paste the contents of an 'ipconfig' into your next post please?

    Start > Run > CMD > Enter > ipconfig.

OK, so I broke down and reformatted and installed windows from the disks that came with the PC, and am still getting the same results. My ipconfig results are as follows:

This is after fresh install, applications update from recovery disks, and just set up openDNS on my pc, previously I had set it up through the router. (now it is set up in both places)

I'd set the PC's DNS server to the router; 192.168.1.1. In Internet options > Connections > LAN settings, uncheck 'automatically detect settings' and OK your way out.

Enter the router's setup and check that it's retained the OpenDNS settings.

Turn off the router for 30 seconds then restart it, reboot the PC and test again.

If that doesn't fix it, I think there's something wrong RR's side.

I couldn't seem to find where you were talking about satrow, I basically followed the openDNS directions at https://store.opendns.com/setup/operatingsystem/windows-7 to set up the computer itself to use openDNS and did the same thing, but changed the preferred dns server to my router, and left the alternate dns server empty.

I double checked the router was still using openDNS's nameservers, and get the same results.

I am not sure how it could be a problem with RoadRunner (my isp) since I can log on fine from other PC's in the house, and I am even more stumped that it is still an issue after I reformatted and installed Windows 7 from the recovery disks that came with the laptop. The only portion of the hard drive that was not formatted, was the 20GB that was set up from the factory to be the recovery partition, otherwise the format should have gotten rid of any possible undetected malware, and re-installing windows and the drivers should have fixed it if it was a driver issue. I am just not sure where to go from here. It has been nearly a week, and I am still at square 1 with what is even going on.

    Symptoms thus far, are:
-http://www.update.microsoft.com goes to a blank white page
-facebook/twitter/myspace all redirect back to the login page when I put my username and password in
-setting up a MajorGeeks.com forum account it didn't show the captcha code
-trying to download Firefox from mozilla.com after the re-install of Windows 7 there is no button on the main page to download Firefox
-Flash videos on some websites were refusing to play
-after the re-install of Windows 7 when I got to adobe to get flashplayer or adobe reader, I can click on the button to start download, but it never starts the download
-some websites tell me that I am not accepting cookies, or that java may be turned off, but Firefox/IE neither one have any restriction on cookies (I just have them set up to be deleted when I close the browser)

Again none of this is happening to any of the other PC's at home. So, I doubt it is the ISP, not sure if it could be an issue with the router, and no idea how it has persisted through a format/re-install of Windows 7.

Hmm, it's possible that the router has been set (somehow) to deal with requests to or from your PC's IP differently to the other computers in the house. A thorough grilling of the advanced settings in the router is needed, I think.

Oh, just check the PC's time and date is accurate too (and set and save the correct time and date on the router, it makes it easier to cross reference the looged events).

Ok, got home tonight, and did a factory reset to the router, and re-set up the wireless/openDNS and loe and behold it is working fine now. Thank you everyone who helped me try to figure this out. It was/is much appreciated :)

Glad that's sorted, it was a awkward one, I suggest you check for a firmware update for your router, it may fix whatever that bug was :)
