Can't open Drives

I'm trying to fix my cousin's computer. When I open My Computer and try to open a drive, the window pops up that asks me to select a program to open it with. It could be a problem with Windows Explorer that occured when removing malware.

To get around the problem I created shortcuts to a folder in both the C: and D: drives and when I click the up arrow I can get to the root directory of each drive.

How can I get their computer back to working right?

 

Oh, I forgot, they have Windows XP Proffessional.
