About 6 months ago I got a whole bunch of "parasites" somehow, and installed the Ad-aware program. Since then I cannot open either e-mail links or web page links. I just get a blank microsoft box and nothing ever appears in it. This is annoying, and I don't know what to do. I have re-installed Windows 98, hoping that would solve the problem, but, no, it didn't. Can you help me? Oh, if you answer, it has to be in language that a two-year old would understand, since I am computer illiterate. Thank you!

See if this is part of the problem>

Links from within Outlook Express don't work.
    Microsoft.

It may even fix Internet Explorer.

Thanks for trying, Hipster, but that did not work. I appreciate the effort, though.

Thanks Adrynalyne. That fixed part of the problem. I still can't open any Microsoft windows from web page links, though. The e-mail problem is fixed, so I'm grateful to you for that.

Did all of those things, but still no go. The weird thing is that IE 6.0 was working fine until I got those parasites. I'm thinking of setting my computer on fire, I think that may fix it!
Thanks so much for the suggestions, by the way. Much appreciated.

go to add/remove and click on IE6 and choose repair from the prompt.. hopefully that will repair it.

    CAUSE
This behavior may occur for any of the following reasons:
The (Default) value setting in one or more of the following registry keys points to an incorrect location for the Urlmon.dll file:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9e0-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9f1-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9f2-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]

This may occur if you install a customized version of Internet Explorer that was created with the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) version 5.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1), 5.5 SP1, or 6.0.

start--run-- type REGEDIT.. then follow the path to the keys . The only thing you need to pay attention to in finding the right ones is the first string before the baf9.

then take a look at the image posted.. make sure that the path to the urlmon.dll is listed. You have windows 98 it sounds, so it won't be in WINNT like mine is. It will be in windows\system or windows\system32 and if I recall it's in system32. My win98 brain is fading..lol.

ok, went into the regedit and selected HKEY CLASSES ROOT, then went down the list to CLSID, and then went down THAT list and found the 3 registry keys listed above. All 3 are there. Did I do that right? I didn't see anything that looked like windows/system32. Oh, God, I'm hopeless at this stuff! Thankfully, you seem to have A LOT of patience!

do you see how I expanded the folders on the left? just like opening folders on your system. Double click on all three entries so they're all expanded. Now, click on the INPROCSERVER32 folder for each one to expand them. Do you see the entry for C:\windows\system32 in either of those?

if not then stand by cause we'll have to back up your registry first before we go any further and I have to run out and won't be back until quite a bit later.

    mine says c:\windows\system\urlmon.dll

no system32 in any of them.

now do a search on your system for urlmon.dll and make sure it is actually in that spot.
