I have a desktop (HP a1310n) running xp media center and a notebook (pavilion ze4400). I can't get them to talk to each other. I'm using a sygate firewall on both. I've checked the settings on the firewall and they seem ok for sharing. If I ping the other pc they all timeout. I have have used the microsoft setup feature with no success. In my network places I can see the shared folder on the other pc however I cann't access it. I don't have permissions. I am the admin of both pc's. I'm not positive but I think I could share files between these two in the past. the desktop is a LAN connected to a linksys router. the notebook is wireless using a linksys NIC. If I'm not giving enough info let me know. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

hmm, are they all on the same workgroup? im assuming that they are.

also check the tcp/ip setting of each network card that are on the network, are you assigning them manually or are you letting windows assign them automatically?

have you tried disabling the firewalls and trying to ping them?

Put both computers into safe mode with networking, see if it works.

If it does, disable windows firewall or try uninstalling Sygate.

Thanks Pimped and Gecks. They are both part of the "MSHOME" workgroup. I'm using DHCP to assign the ip addresses. I can't access windows firewall there's an error when I try to: "due to an unidentified problem, windows can not display the widows firewall settings" I'll try safe mode tonight to see if that makes a difference. if not I'll uninstall sygate and see how that goes. Also I have server2003 as a dual-boot on the desktop would that effect anything?

with both pc's in safe mode I can ping one another, however I can't find the other pc in a search on the network, nor does any of the shared folders appear in my network places. I'm getting somewhere, but still can't access files on the other pc. I didn't have time to unistall my firewalls.

I'm still at square one. I've unistalled the firewalls on both, still nothing. I've found two new things. I can't access windows firewall on either pc. it's say due to an unidentified error the settings cannot be displayed. On the desktop if I right click on my computer/properties/computer name/change it says that I have to install networking before i can change the computers domain membership. the workgroup area is ghosted out where I can't change the workgroup name. The other pc I can still change the workgroup name if I wanted to. Still none of pc
s are showing up on network search and no files are appear in my network places. the internet works fine on both. Still stumped...
