WinXP Home SP3; WMP11: attached below is the error I get with WMP11 when trying to play DVDs. It was originally WMP9, and I was getting the same error so I upgraded to WMP11. I have uninstalled and re-installed the KLite Standard codec pack, I have updated to the latest NVidia drivers, no dice. When using Media Player Classic, I get a "DVD- Copy Protect Fail" error message. I even tried a brand new DVD drive and checked the Region to be sure it was set to Region 1 (USA). I've used WMP and the KLite pack many many times on other PCs and this is the first time I've had this problem. Everything else on the PC seems to be fine, no malware. There was a version of Interactual Player installed, but it wasn't playing movies either so it was removed.... any suggestions will be appreciated!

    THX!

i had a similar situation upon replacing a dead DVDRW,after replacing the unit with a new one,it still would not read anything that i put in it,the old drive errored out so frequently the the DMA settings reverted to pio,i found the solution on this forum,i ran a vbs that changed the settings back to DMA,then i used doug knox's cddvd fix in safe mode with the ide's unplugged from the disc drives, powered off, then reconnected the cables ,and restarted in normal mode, windows found both drives(DVD-DVDRAM)as new and they both were working again ,i dont know if you tried that yet,but it solved my problem,I'll put them in a zip for you in case you might want to give it a go,i also think you can uncheck the copyright validation in wmp if i remember correctly...
(i put both files in the same zip)

Thanks for the info and the .ZIP. I'm gonna try it out in a few minutes... I'll post my results.

:cry Didn't work..... I was thinking that maybe it has something to with HDCP in the video drivers, so I opened the NVidia Control Panel, and there's nothing listed that even remotely mention HDCP or anything else even close.... this is driving me crazy! I'm now really curious as to what caused this to happen in the first place, and once it's fixed, I'll be sure to post the info.

I had the same thing happen to my XP desktop when my PowerDVD software became (somehow) corrupted. I couldn't play DVD's on any player because I'd get that message about the decoder. I uninstalled PowerDVD and re-installed it and that solved my problem.

If you don't have a re-install disk for the Interactual player (my disc came with the PC) then I would suggest, if you haven't already, try using VLC. I had a friend who had the same problem and I told her to try downloading VLC (because I lent my PowerDVD disc to someone and they lost it..*sigh) and she did and she was able to immediately watch her DVD's.

I've never used KLite, so I don't know if it's same decoder as say PowerDVD or InterActuals. So, sorry if this is something you already tried.

I tried PowerDVD and it doesn't work either, there's a similar message about digital protection. I've done A LOT of research about this problem in the past day or two, and it there seems to be an underlying reference to InterActual being involved in many of the cases where people have this same problem. Many people also mention that using VLC works, but that is NOT a fix IMO, it's simply a workaround. The PC isn't mine, it belongs to a client and workarounds with clients are unacceptable. The problem MUST be fixed. The client needed the PC for the rest of the week (not for anything with DVDs though) so the PC is gone until Monday. But the problem still exists, so if anyone has any input, PLEASE post!!! I have tried numerous codec packs and codec fixes, I have tried just about every media player there is (except VLC for the reason mentioned), I have tried several paid DVD playback apps (trials of PowerDVD and WinDVD and something else I don't remember), I have uninstalled/reinstall WMP11, I have tried a total of 3 different DVD drives: all have the same result, so I know it's a DEEP problem in Windows somewhere. I originally set up the PC back in November with a clean XP Home SP3 installation, and it worked fine then, so I know it's something "recent" and the client says the problem started about 10 days ago, but says that no software changes were made to the PC 10 days ago....
    :confused

VLC/XP and DVD playing boils down to this - XP when still in Beta, had a built-in DVD (and MP3 ripping ability to 192+kbps) codec. This was never removed, only disabled when XP was launched officially. PowerDVD was one of the 2 commercial ventures that MSFT pointed users at if they needed DVD playing ability.

If your clients are not happy with a workaround, ask them if you can wipe and reload, 'cos something in the Registry looks like it's borked.

Would this effect other media players like Media Player Classic, PowerDVD, etc?

I totally agree 100%. I actually did mention to the client that a wipe and reload would be the quickest, most sure-fire way to fix the problem, and he said "impossible", but I'm pretty sure I can persuade him otherwise....

... and THANKS to the input everyone! If anyone has a "non-wipe" fix, feel free to post!
