I had a problem starting my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. The details are irrelevant right now. I took out the hard drive and connected it to another computer via USB as the drive D and downloaded all my data successfully. I'm running XP on both computers, by the way.
There is only one thing I cannot access.....my Firefox bookmarks. I have tried searching on drive D for "mozilla bookmarks', and "json" files, but no luck.
I even deleted Firefox completely from the second, working laptop and then started Firefox (apparently) from drive D. Nothing.
Can anyone please suggest something else ?

Try the bookmarkbackups directory in the default firefox user profile directory.

You are trying to navigate to a hidden folder that contains the bookmarks. So you want to have Hidden and System files showing.

Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab> tick the circle for show hidden files, and untick the box for Hide Operating System Files.

Then try to navigate to D:\Documents and Settings\go to your old user account name folder\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\6wyaykw0(random numbers).default\bookmarkbackups

There should be several copies. You can copy the whole folder over as it only takes a few kb.

Ok....keeping in mind that I am using the hard drive from one computer as an external drive "E" on another (I originally said "D"....sorry)....I still cannot access my Mozilla bookmarks on the external drive.
I have done what Sach2 said and no luck. All I get is the bookmarkbackups from the Mozilla which WAS on the computer I am now using, on which I have deleted the Mozilla browser (to attempt to avoid this problem).
I have done a search of Drive E for "bookmarks", and "bookmarkbackups" and Mozilla bookmarks", but nothing. Strangely, when I do a search of drive "E', even though I have unticked the box for "Hide Operating System Files" on this computer, it then says that it is NOT searching for hidden files.
Any suggestion, Sach2 or others ?

In XP I guess you are using the search companion search menu...the one with the dog (he can be turned off by the way). I'm pretty sure on that that you have to tick something on the left side near the bottom below the search boxes. There's a "More advanced options" expander. Then one of the choices is "Search hidden files and folders". There's one for "Search system files and folders" too.

But you probably already knew all of that...

If you go to My Computer and click on each folder in the list does it stop you at any particular folder?

    E:\Documents and Settings
go to your old user account name folder
    Application Data
    Mozilla
    Firefox
    Profiles
    6wyaykw0(random numbers).default
    bookmarkbackups

Hey, alright ! It worked. Many many thanks to you all, particularly sach2. And to show my very real appreciation, as I can't do anything in return, I include here a couple of jokes which I had not heard until recently:

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates.
'In honor of this holy season' Saint Peter said, 'You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.'

The Englishman fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. 'It's a candle', he said.

'You may pass through the pearly gates' Saint Peter said.

The Scotsman reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, 'They're bells.'

Saint Peter said 'You may pass through the pearly gates'.

The Irishman started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women's panties.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, 'And just what do those symbolize?'

The paddy replied, 'These are Carols.'

A man owned a small farm in the south west of WA.
The Department of Consumer & Employment Protection heard that he was not paying proper wages to his employees and sent an agent down to interview him.

"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent.
"Well," replied the farmer, "there's my farm hand who's been with me for 3 years.
I pay him $400 a week plus free room and board.
The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $450 per week plus free room and board.
Then there's the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here.
He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.
He also sleeps with my wife occasionally."

"That's the guy I want to talk to --- the half-wit," says the agent.

"That would be me," replied the farmer.
