I had recently gotten my laptop fixed by Geek Squad, and when I got it back I noticed that they had installed a folder on my desktop named “System Analyzer.” There’s an .exe file in there that is, I think, a basic version of Webroot Spy Sweeper. A couple of days ago I decided to use that program to scan my computer and it said I had a Mal/Generic-A virus. None of my other AV or Spyware programs could come up with the same result. I restored my computer to a restore point created the day I got my computer back from Geek Squad, hoping that would get rid of the virus; it didn’t.

I didn’t want to spend $200 to get it fixed again, so I found your website and performed all the steps in the malware removal guide, but the Geek Squad program still says I have the Mal/Generic-A virus. Is this just a false positive?

It's worth noting that the program doesn't give the name of the file it thinks is infected.

    Thank you for your help

I attached the logs as requested

You need to tell me exactly what it reported.....the exact path.

You should double the amount of RAM in your system:
    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 167.89 MB

In the meantime, please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 15"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 6"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Reboot and download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

That is all that the program tells me, it doesn't give a path.

    The log is attached.

Your logs are clean. I suggest that you first delete everything in the System Analyzer folder and then delete the folder. Are you having any other issues?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Nope, no other malware problems, but I am having a couple problems with your final steps so far.

    1. I ran what you said to uninstall combofix and it did uninstall it, but it didn't reset the hidden files and folders settings. I'm sure this is probably no big deal (I can just reset it manually), but I thought let you know.

    2. When I went to remove HijackThis a warning said that it was already uninstalled, but it was still listed in the add/remove list.

I stopped there and didn't continue with the rest of the steps.

Just continue on...once you run the MGClean.bat your hidden files and folders should be reset.

All finished now. I can't thank you enough for your help. You guys are way better than Geek Squad, and you do it all for free. Speaking of which, is there any way to make a donation to you guys? It just doesn't seem right to have you guys do all this work for nothing.

    Thank you very much.
