I've Window XP Home Edition - IE 6
I am trying to remove Service Pack 2. This is not found in my Add/Remove Programs, even with the update box checked.
    Run program can't find: c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
Restore Point does not show date of install, or I unable to search for it. Either way, I can't locate install date.
    Help.

Your command line should read as follows
Remove Windows XP SP2 by using the Spuninst.exe command-line command
    To do this:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following lines.
    Press ENTER after each line.
    cd %Windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
    spuninst.exe
3.Follow the instructions to remove Windows XP SP2.

I hope I followed your instructions correctly, here is what I did:

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\DEBS&CHARLES>cd\

    C:\>%Windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
The system cannot find the path specified.

    C:\>

Was SP2 preinstalled on your machine?

My laptop did come with SPII pre-installed. It was installed about mid Februarary, but cannot find that install in Restore point, either

    Then you cannot remove SP2.

Adrynalyne---If he does a repair this would remove the service packs

Only if its not preinstalled. If its preinstalled, then his media likely has SP2 integrated, as well.

The bad thing about using repair to remove a service pack, is that the registry entries arent reverted, but the files are. It really makes a mess of the OS.

I am curious, Charles, why do you want to remove SP2?

    I second this!

Unless it is ONE program that refuses to run properly.

What is causing you to revert to something that may/will cause issues in the future?

Sorry for the delay in my reply, I had some personal business that needed my full attention. Second, THANKS for your replies and concerns. Thirdly, I had a typo in my original reply, Service Pack II was NOT, I repeat, NOT preinstalled. To answer your question on why I want to remove it . . . well, it appears I don't know enough about IE6 security and active contents because on virtually every page that I open I get this message, "To help protect your securiity, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could acces your computer." This only started after I SP II was installed. To go to the next page, I have to right click for options to give permission, plus even after I do that, downloads requests are either just ignored (press icon, nothing happens) or after download is complete, no exe. command is there. And whenever I go to Yahoo Mail, it says my java scripts are not enabled, and it is really difficult to access Yahoo mail; but I've checked my IE options, and they are enabled. At any rate, I do not SP II on my desktop; I use VCOM firewall on my desktop and and have a recommended antivirus and MS antispyware running on it too. I just question with all the issues on my LAPTOP, why do I need SP II. No doubt my ignorance plays a large part of my issues here, thus my questions. THANKS.

    Try answering the post.

Using FireFox is not the solution, it's an alternative.

Charles, a lot of the "issues" you are experiencing can be adjusted if they annoy you.

For example, ""To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer"

From memory, if you go into Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, and check "Allow active content...."

Bear in mind though that this will make you more susceptible. I would just use the default settings at the minimum and put up with it.

SP2 includes a lot of security, system and application improvements.

Not only that, but you will require it installed to access further critical patches.

Ok Charles I did a little research for ya chk this out "Quote"
VCOM System Suite 5 [SS5] (by ®V Communications, Inc.) also has a very user friendly virus protection software associated with it, and also a very nice firewall (which, at this time, is a bit incompatable with Windows SP II, but VCOM is working to correct that issue; in the mean time, you can turn off the Vcom firewall, and activate the Windows SP II firewall
So If you want follow the advice above turn off VCOM firewall and activate the Windows SP II firewall

Be aware that if you use SP2's firewall, it doesn't provide outbound protection.

If something makes it onto your computer, it will be able to connect to the internet.

I suggest you use a third-party product like ZoneAlarm or Outpost.
