Have been having trouble in Mozilla with the browser being hijacked to sites other than the link I click on, so I was running through the steps in the HijackThis thread.

Successfully ran SUPER AntiSpyware and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware but can't get past the step to run ComboFix. I've downloaded it twice and still get the following Error message: Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation.

I am running it off the Desktop per instructions.

    Thanks

    Firefox gets hijacked

When I do a Google search on a topic and click on one of the links, it takes me some other search site. There are similar topics to what I'm looking for, but it doesn't go to the link that it should of. If I copy and paste the link in to the address bar it goes there fine. Went through all the steps of Malware removal, but still acting the same way.

I've attached the four log files.

    Re: Firefox gets hijacked

Not trying to bump, but now I'm real nervous. After going through the process to generate the log files, now my McAfee is disabled when ever I start up the computer, and I have to manually go in and enable it. I did notice it got disabled during one step in the process - as I got the little balloon popping up that my Anti Virus wasn't running - but something looks to have permanently disabled it on start-up. I also got a warning popping up when McAfee was running yesterday (just after finishing all the steps and re-enabling McAfee - as I noticed the balloon was still up warning me that my Anti Virus was still turned off - as I thought it would be re-enabled when I finished the process) that it considered ComboFix to be an infection. Now I'm totally confused and real nervous about what's going on with my computer.

Delete all copies of ComboFix that you have and download the below to your Desktop:

    combofix.exe

Then reboot into safe mode and try to run ComboFix.

Whether it runs or does not run, reboot afterwards back to normal mode and complete the rest of the READ & RUN ME including running MGtools and attaching all logs.

chaslang - I've since got Combofix running - I hit a different site from the original, but have another post with the logs. Sorry - for some reason I couldn't find this post to reply to and started another one with the log files attached. It's called "Firefox gets hijacked" and it was posted 4-05-09 at 20:46. As I reported there, I'm still getting hijacked to any link that pops up on a Google search.

I'm still having the issue after running through the steps in the READ & RUN ME. One thing that really concerns me is for some reason my computer boots up with McAfee disabled, and I always have to enable it. Not sure how to fix this, but think it might have got disabled when I finally did get Combofix running.

Again, I apologize for the two posts, and you can close this thread.

    Re: Firefox gets hijacked

    I merged your threads together.

It does not matter. Whether intentional or not, the effect is still the same. We work on threads in oldest to newest time frame order and adding any new post will change your thread to be newer.

First I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

    Uninstall the below software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Toolbar <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME

Now we need to use ComboFix again.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!
Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

chaslang - got through the Combofix just fine, but I get an error (Error 1330) when trying to install the latest Sun Java - it tells me that Data1.cab has a invalid digital signature file. So I've not moved on to run MGtools until I hear back, as I don't want to run out of the sequence you've specified. I did attach the Combofix.txt file, but have not made it to the step to run MGtools.

Really appreciate your help, and I'm wondering if there is any way to donate money to this site - as I feel the folks that support this provide a great service.

    Thanks!

Just continue on and get the new MGtools log for me.

Also tell me how things are working.

Here is the MGlogs.zip file. Still boots up with McAfee disabled, and I have to manually enable it.

Also, don't get the redirect when I click on a Google search link. It goes directly to the link as spelled out in Google.

    Thanks

    Your logs are clean.

Try logging in with a different user account and installing it. If that does not work, you will have to post about this in the Software Forum.

Uninstall McAfee. Reboot and then run the below

    McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

Then reboot again and now try reinstalling McAfee.

chaslang - thanks for the reply. I went to Sun Java site and downloaded version 13 and it worked fine. I had originally tried logging on under another user, and also added a new user - to no avail. So not sure if the file is corrupt that I tried to download through Major Geeks or what.

Is there anything I need to do with Combofix? On most of the other posts I've read through, there are usually clean up instructions.

    Thanks again,

    D

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

chaslang - can't get McAfee Enterprise to re-install. I tried the removal tool after removing the program through the Add/Remove Programs and it told me it doesn't work for Enterprise. Now all that happens is it tries to update, and tells me one of the ZIP files is corrupt and it tried to download again and it still won't load. So now I don't have any Virus Protection. What do you recommend to clean up the Enterprise Uninstall?

This is actually a problem that you would need to discuss with Network Associates (McAfee). I could attempt to force remove the startup processes and services, but that will not cleanup the hundreds of registry keys they may have entered. And thus a reinstall afterwards still may not work.
