    This is my cousins pc. (Running windows xp - sp2) She doesn't know how the pc got messed up, she said a message popped up like..."you've been infected etc and something about a trojan" it was from avast which is the av on this machine after that the trouble began. So she called me.

    First of all there's something screwy with user control. There is only one user account on this pc, no administrator account that i can find. But almost everything I try to do says denied access etc. so tried your 'read and run me first' here's what happened, and the messages I got from the various programs.

    *update java - wouldn't allow me to remove java from add/remove programs
    *defogger - unable to open or create a file
    *i ran SAS - however it wouldn't let me save SASpyware log, but it was clean, found nothing.
    *MalwareBytes - run-time error '481': Invalid picture
    *combo fix - will not start (won't bring up the window to let me click 'run')
    *root repeal - i couldn't see if firewall was on or off, says i need to be computer adminitrator. tried to run it anyway and got this message 'decompression error (5)!'
    *MGTools - i ran it but it didn't zip it's self. I zipped the folder it made and am attaching it. I was not able to get any other logs to attach.

    Boy this is a mess guys, I'm sorry..but I just have no idea what to do.
    Oh....I also ran an boot-time scan first with avast and it didn't report finding anything.
    Thanks in advance ~Teresa

    You attached the MGTools folder, not the MGlogs.zip.

    Try it again, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Ok, i got the MGlogs now, and it is attached. Maybe I should tell you some of the symptoms we're having.
    I can get on the internet fine.
    When I click any program (crapcleaner, spyware progs, even Word) i get a pop-up asking me to "run as" current user or choose another. But there's not another user. If I click "ok" some go ahead and work. However alot of programs won't work.
    I can't make any changes such as - clicking "don't show this again", the pc doesn't take that command and sometimes I get a message about being the administrator.
    I can't save a new document, like notepad etc. I get a couple of different messages. You don't have permission to save in this directory. If I choose document it says documents can't be found.
    I don't know if any of this will help....I hope so.
    Thanks so much ~Teresa

    Are you having these issues when you log into the Administrator account?

    Code:
    Users on this computer:
    Is Admin? | Username
    ------------------
       Yes    | Administrator
                 | Guest
                 | HelpAssistant (Disabled)
       Yes    | Owner
              | SUPPORT_388945a0 (Disabled)
    I don't see ComboFix on your desktop. Please put it there and double click it. Tell me what happens.

    In the meantime, lets start with this;

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    I'm sorry, combofix was on my desktop. I followed the read me run me to a "T" I had just moved it before running the GetLogs.bat file..sorry!

    Ok...things are looking up on this end. I was able to run combofix, and followed the rest of your directions. I'm attaching the logs you asked for.
    While waiting to hear from you I'm going to start the read me run me again since I can run the programs now.

    1 more thing, this is my cousins pc, she said she has been doing something called "ten dollar click" supposed to pay you $10 per click once you hit 1000 clicks watching ads. (yeah right!) I am 99-44/100% sure this is a bad idea, and is probably what caused this trouble. You're the pro, can you confirm this for me to show her? :)

    Oh...about the administrator account. I've never switched to admin and don't know how, neither does my cousin??

    Thanks so much ~Teresa

    I know I'm not supposed to post again but in this case I don't mind being moved back the bottom of the list. And I'm hoping it will save you time and another post.
    This pc seems to running good now and I was able to do the full read me & me. I'm attaching the logs.
    Thanks so much for your help ~Teresa

    Your logs are clean!! :)

    As to the ten dollar click, I am not familiar with that and it very well may not be how the system was infected. I guess we will find out if she continues and gets reinfected.

    When the log in window opens, you can just remove the user name and type in Administrator. It sound like you have not set a password for that account, so I would suggest that you do, not tell her what it is, but keep it safe so that the account can be used if she ever gets badly infected again.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
