This is a heavily infected Compaq SR1420NX running XP Home SP2. When booting into normal mode, there is a start menu but no programs are listed there. Can't get to control panel to add remove programs. Had to create a shortcut on the desktop to get to a dos prompt (no run command from Start Menu). Finally was able to manually delete Antivir 2008 and Antispyware 2008, which were causing continuous popups. The main problem is I cannot run Spybot nor Malwarebytes. I was able to install them, but when I click on the shortcut nothing happens. Same thing in Safe Mode. Same thing when I go to c:\Program Files and click on the .exe file. Same thing with ComboFix and MGTools. For some reason I was able to install and run SuperAntiSpyware, but after running it for a few minutes the computer restarts. I tried it in Safe Mode and was able to complete a QuickScan (which found and removed about 50 infections), but the problems persist. Still cannot run Spybot, malware bytes, ComboFix, nor MGTools. Any assistance would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Dennis.

Did you really try runniong MGtools.exe? What exactly happens? Did you check to see if the MGlogs.zip file was created? MGtools does not truly do a Windows installation and since it is really not a malware scanning/removal program, it is unlikely that malware would look for it and stop it from running.

Also things you can do to try and get Spybot and Malwarebytes to run. Rename the executable file. Not the installation file, the actual program file that you run the program with. Examples:

Goto C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy and locate the SDMain.exe file and rename it to anything else (like SDM.exe or sb.exe )

Goto C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and locate the mbam.exe file and rename it to anything else (like mb.exe or mam.exe )

Then attach the log from safe boot mode.

    thanks Chas.
Following your suggestions, I was able to run SpyBot and Malware Bytes, which removed numerous infections, followed by Combo and MGTools, and all appears well. Once again, Major Geeks to the rescue.

You're welcome, but it may be a good idea to attach your logs for us to check to make sure everything was removed.

Yes, unfortunately the owner of this computer was desperate to get it back, even though I recommended waiting to have you look at the logs. Let's just hope everthing's clean, otherwise I'll have it back in a few days.
    Thanks again.
