Format it by Right Clicking on it.

Click on it where? In disk management? When I right click on it in disk management the only options i get are convert to dynamic disk, new partition, properties and help.
How do I format a new disk?
Thanks for the help so far!

Try over the "Unallocated" part. XP can't use it until its formatted, stick with NTFS.

From there you can assign a drive letter. That is a big pretty good size drive, you can have up to four partitions if you choose.

as Jerkyking was implying, you need to create at least 1 partition on the new drive and format it before it is useable.

Are you sure you don't have XP Pro? The home edition does not support Dynamic Disks or conversions. If you still need Help use try the help function and search for "formatting". It should come up.

Sorted it now, I didn't realise that creating a new partition was needed to format the disk! Yes I do have windows xp pro, not sure how that happened I bought the comp with xp home! It must of been when I took it to a computer shop to upgrade mobo etc.

I am havinng the same problen iv installed a 2nd hdd maxtor 40gig its the same as my original drive but "my computer" only shows the 1st drive. unfortunately i cant follow these instructions as im using win98 se and the below options arent available
everything is set up proper in the bios and the bios recognises the drive as the slave drive, i also ran everest and it also recognised the drive
the only time windows recognised the drive was when i 1st installed it but it was set to removable storage and if i tried to right click or just click it it froze my system

kirk_mufc, glad things got worked out.

HUNETTE, I'm not familar with Win98's or what it has for Disk Utilities, so I'll defer to someone else.

In both your cases the software that is provided with the new drive is meant to overcome this problem. If you didn't get the disk, many of those Drive Utilities are avail via this site.

Restart your system in MSDOS mode. (Start --> Shutdown, click the proper radio button)
At the command prompt, type fdisk and press enter. This is WIN98s partitioning utility. You will want to create an extended partition on your new hard drive. Follow the prompts; its fairly simple.
