Can't see some files/folders over local network

My first post here. I've been searching all over the internet but I think my situation is unique as I have yet to see anyone have a similar problem.

I have 3 networked computers (one is a laptop on WLAN) all running XP Pro. One of these (call it SVR1) acts as a file server. I keep everything on here and share it out as needed to the other computers. I have the shares with "$" to keep it hidden from network browsing. My second pc (call it PC1) has mapped drives to some of the shares on SVR1.

So as one example of this problem. On SVR1 I have a shared out a folder called "Share1$". And on PC1, I mapped this share to drive D with the same account on SVR1 (SVR1\SVRUser1). I'm logged on PC1 as PCUser1.

Now, when logged on PC1 I can see a lot of the files and folders on SVR1... but I can't see all of the files. When I drill down to a couple of folders in the share, I don't see some of the files that should be there. I can see them fine when I'm logged directly on SVR1.

I've even tried using the same account name on both SVR1 and PC1 but still the same issue. I've turned off the AntiVirus and Firewall programs too but no luck.

This same problem occurs still when I access the share from the laptop.

I think it could be due to some Windows Update package because I didn't notice it until after some updates.

Anyone have any suggestions to try? Anyone have experienced this same problem?

Fixed it.. found the solution on another forum...

I had disabled 8.3 names a while back and that was the cause. Once I re-enabled it and rebooted, all was fine.
