Can't shutdown Ad-Aware

Ok Chaps. This one has me stumped.

I'm using Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 and it does it's job just fine. But it refuses to shutdown by any normal method ie clicking the little black X in the top right, Alt-F4, clicking in the top left and selecting Close. None of 'em work. I currently have to kill the process in order to close it.

I have tried uninstalling and reloading, including clearing all entries from the registry but no luck so far.

Don't think that it is anything to do with the OS (Win98SE - old fashioned I know - but I like it :) ).

So if anyone has any suggestions I'll give them a try. :)

Guessing a 98 issue, it is getting hard and harder to diangne problems with that operating sytem simply because XP has many advantages, like processes and no blue screens, to make diagnostics easier.

Thanks for the interest MA. :)

If it is a 98 problem than it is specific to this PC as I have another PC also running 98SE where I have no problems at all with it. Both PCs have the OS to the same stanadard ie all the available updates and although both would run XP I don't see much point in upgrading now as Vista will soon be the OS of choice for many and it is only the one PC and one program I'm having the trouble with.

I can live with it but it is annoying me that I can't fix it - in fact that bugs me more than the problem itself.

Definitely a tough one, there Yargwel. I would be trying to squeeze some support out of Lavasoft.

Cheers Mada but as it say at the top of that page: "Technical inquiries about the freeware-version (Personal) will not be answered here." :(

Try uninstalling it completely, but this time reinstall it to a different path.

    Another thing to try. Doubt...

Try in safe mode. Run adaware. Do a full scan. Then close it. Does it work?

Okay, if it works, then perhaps some program is causing adaware from closing.

Well - tried installing to a different path and that made no difference (even tried a different drive).

And it still refuses to shutdown even in Safe Mode. :(

    Any other suggestions?

I would suggest trying a manual uninstall after the regular uninstall by first backing up the registry and then going thru it and removing all Keys that refer to "Lavasoft" or "AdAware". Then remove all directories on the HD for the same. Then reboot and reinstall

I've never had a problem with AdAware but I've used this method to correct issues with ZoneAlarm and Norton AV before with pretty good success.

    There's a new update, (SE1R97), might try it, can't hurt...wobbles

Not much scientific basis for this, but if fully removing adaware from the registry and the HD does not solve the problem, I would be thinking about corrupt temporary files- maybe try cleaning out temp inet files, the contents of %temp%, etc, incase it is trying to write to a corrupt temporary file/log file/etc and hanging on shutdown. :)

    Just a thought!

@wobbles: No still does it as it has with all definition files so far.

@Gecks: Well I had tried that before but no harm in trying again but still no luck.

The fact that it still won't shutdown even in Safe Mode makes me think it may be a corrupt OS file somewhere but what I can'T think.

You could always install Window over itself.

98SE has System File Checker, but it's a pain as you have to tell it where to place each file.

Well tried SFC and it came up with four dll files three of which were to do with the Windows Colour Management System and the third was to do with the Windows setup function.

Both my PCs have the same versions but to make sure I overwrote the files on the system where Ad-Aware doesn't shutdown from the the system where it does.

    No difference though. :(

Don't really fancy over-installing Windows as this is the only problematic program I have and I can always just kill the process. It also wouldn't really help me understand what the problem is (and that is what I really want to know).

  16. I try makeing sure that the automatic scan function is disabled. I think that setting makes the system automatically scan during system boot.

    Disabled. No change. :(

  18. Wonder if its a registry problem. Run ccleaner's registry cleaner. Make a backup too in case somthing goes wrong. Well see if that helps.

It shouldn't be a Registry problem. He deleted the Registry files before reinstalling.

I also suggested he reinstall to a different path, which rules out the Registry.

@ the new tech guy. Tried no difference.

@ Insomniac. Tried your method again after the registry cleaner but still no change.

I knew this one might be tricky and it may be due to something totally bizarre which is why I'm happy to try all suggestions except re-format and re-load Windows. :)

    Hi Yargwel.

Don't know if you tried dial-a-fix or if it works on WIN98, but the advice you all gave me sure helped and it seems to fix a lot of problems. Use the full version. Hope this helps.

    Hi hutchfred. :)

    Tried dial-a fix. Didn't help unfortunately. :(

I think I may well be stuck with this little annoyance.

  23. It could be a compatiblity issue so you may be right yargwell.
