    Hi

I run Windows XP,I have Firefox my antivirus is AGV fee 9.0 and I use incredimail, my problem seems to have started after I ran the smart defrag program, because I needed to go out I ticked the box at the bottom of program saying shut down computer after defragmentation.
When I started the pc and went into my incredimail program I received email but could not send it, I have been onto my provider "ntlworld" who have gone through the settings with me and say that they cannot see any problem as far as they are concerned.
I have an actiontec router, so unplugged this and reset it, still no joy,(internet ok) the laptop which is linked to this network also will not send email.

Hope that's all info required and that someone has an idea what has gone wrong. Many thanks :confused

    Error message below

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 aamtaout04-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [213.105.77.150]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

If neither the laptop or the desktop send email then I would suggest that there is a network fault, and your provider just can't find it.

If you have reset/restarted all the components on your end of the network and your ISP said they are set up correctly, then I suggest you contact them again as they appear to have a problem.

Thanks for that I will try with them again, I was looking for reasons and thought the only thing I had done was the smart defrag

This would not have affected the other computer on the network though, therefore we can rule out it being the desktop at fault.

In that case try a hard reset of your router.

This will cause you to loose internet connectivity, so make sure you have all settings, user names, etc written down somewhere so you can reconnect. Make sure you also have the router manual handy. If necessary you can download it from the manufacturer's website before you start.

If you look at the back of your router, there should be a small hole which might have a symbol of two triangles pointing towards a line on it, like this: >|<
Push a paper-clip or something small but long in there until you feel a button click. Hold it clicked for about thirty seconds or until the lights on the router change colour or turn off. Then remove the paperclip, and wait for the router to restart. Then follow the manufacturer's manual as to how to set the router up as if it was brand new.

If this does not solve your problem please post back.

    Hi,
As suggested I reset the router with no result, I then thought if I went directly to pc from NTL (server) cable I would know if the problem was the router or something else. When either connected directly or through the router the same error message occurs

    "421 aamtaout02-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [213.105.77.150]"

I feel as if I have covered all bases here any more idea's welcome I wont to get this sorted, am I missing something simple!!

    Many thanks :cry

You should not be able to connect the wall cable direct to the PC. Anyway, the issue you are having sounds as though either your user-name or password is being rejected by the server. Check with NTL if these are correct.

what I have done is to take the connection from NTL out of the router turn the router off and connect this cable directly into pc I can go online as I am now via this method router off?

I am very surprised that this works as I assumed there must be a modem between you and the wall, in your case this modem is in the router I believe, unless there is a modem as well?

    Hi
The cable (NTL) leads to an external modem this then connects to my router and pc hope this makes sense. I have tried turning the NTL modem off so that it resets after this as before I can still receive incoming mail go onto the internet but not send, its very frustrating and I dont see what else it could be, I have checked the passwords they are fine

Okay. Have you confirmed the settings in incredimail?

    Hi
Sorry for delay been trying to figure this prob out. To date I have checked the setting myself and with the NTL people in Incredimail,(3 times via phone) I have tried turning off the firewall, I have taken off my antivirus AGV Free 9 and re downloaded it again,
I have reset the router, and turned off the NTL cable at source and switched on again(they think this solves every problem)
I dont really know what else I can do as I say its not the router as the problem is the same when I run direct from modem to pc.
As I said in the original post this started after I had done a defrag.
Its driving me mad, if you can think of anything else!!
    Thanks for trying.

Will have a look into that, I thought I would go through the remove Malware section, it cant do any harm, but I have Outlook Express and Incredimail on the pc and this happens in both programs (Incredimail is my default )

You may have said already and I just missed it, but does your NTL modem have a firewall too? If so, maybe the settings for it have changed. Just wondering, I had the same problem a while back and the hardware firewall(actiontec) was the culprit. Mine is a modem/router though.

    Thanks Plastidust,
Its worth a look, I will go online and check with Actiontec

I should've kept my fingers off the keyboard, just confused the issue. But I'll try to clarify. The hardware firewall I was talking about(in your case) was the external modem that you referred to in your post #13. I shouldn't have mentioned the Actiontec.

Like Collinsl, I believe the Actiontec is a modem/router but, if you took the router(the Actiontec?) out of the picture and the problem remained that would indicate, as Collinsl has suggested, the server is rejecting the user-name/password or, possibly the external modem's firewall is blocking the port for out going mail.

Hope that makes sense and that I didn't sidetrack things.

    Hi again,
I have uninstalled incredimail (e-mail prog) looked into the firewall cannot see any problems there, I am stumped

Do you have a software firewall installed? If so, leave it active and shut down all hardware firewalls and see if that helps.

I have the windows firewall, and then with firefox comes finjan secure browsing and another thing called no script. I run AVG free 9 antivirus

Those shouldn't cause problems. I've have to get something clear in my head here. You have and NTL external modem to the Actiontec modem/router to the PC is that correct?

NTL is my broadband service provider this comes into the house via cable and modem, from the connection to external modem I connect my actiontac router.
I should add that this problem still happens when I use the external modem directly into the pc.I am sure its something on the pc!!
I did think taking off the email prog and then installing it again would do the job, the other point is that I also have outlook express on the pc but not as my default, for some reason that program is not working and I cannot find it in the add remove section

Weeelllll, I just found this at the Avast! forums
That was posted on: May 05, 2010

This would suggest the ports that are/were being used are going to, or have already changed. In which case you will need to call them back again(sorry) and verify the ports being used. Then make sure any email clients are using those ports and that any firewall is allowing the email clients to use those ports.

If they've already changed the smtp port#, it would explain why you can't send email and would fall in line with Collinsl comment about the server refusing user-name/password.

    Hi
After reading your input above I decided to do some more researching of the error message, linked to your email, and guess what NTL have changed their out going address to virgin.net. I have spoken to them 4 times and they have given me smtp.ntlworld.com, how annoying is that.
I want to say a big thank you to you both for the time and patience you have shown me, I would not have sorted it without your idea's

    BIG thanks

See, I told ya I should never have touched the keyboard. Collinsl had it pegged all along. Glad you got it sorted out. You may have a few problems with AVG if you have it set to scan email. Don't know if AVG free has that feature or not.
