    Hi,

for more than a year i haven't been able to update my version of windows mce to 2005. every time i tried i get some type of error message telling me like a certain update is needed to use this update and when i try to use the update the message mentions i get another error or message. i cant even update from windows media player 10 to 11 because of this. i remember updating it the first time i built my computer and installing windows xp mce but a had to get a new motherboard because it was bad causing my computer to restart a lot which resulted in messing up my hard drive. now that i have everything fixed i cant update and cant find help on microsoft.com. where do i start.:confused

There are a few things I have had trouble updating as well. What I try doing is looking on the update page for a link to another page where you can download the update to your computer and run it from there instead of thru the update site, its not always available. Usually called "for IT Professionals" or similar its a direct download that allows IT Pros to update many machines at will without downloading on each one. Make sure you get the second download first (the one it says you need before you can download the main update) and then try again if you can get that installed. If you can at least get the exact name of the download(s) you need try searching the name (extention and all) on google or thru an ftp search engine.

Do you by any chance use Zone Alarm Firewall? It has stopped me from updating on occasion and just recently it did it again. If so, what you want to do is boot to safe mode, go to C:\Windows\Internet Logs and delete evrything that ends with .RDB and .LDB, some systems have it in Windows/WinNt/Internet Logs. Don't worry, ZA will replace the files at startup but it will get rid of the update problem.

Another less complicated method (you can try this no matter what firewall you use) is to turn on Windows firewall and then stop your other firewall to get the updates. Just be sure to turn windows firewall back off after a restart, you don't want two running at the same time. I wonder if two firewalls could stop you from updating? Hmmm?

what type of updates are failing? i've had problems where automatic updates fail. i've been able to go to "automatic updates" (right click my computer, click on automatic updates tab), disable it. then go to microsoft and do updates from there. it fixed my problem. i normally have mine set to alert me of updates, and not d/l, or install (just my preference).

what i'm getting at, is have you tried updates from both (auto updates, and going straight to microsoft for updates)? anyway, g/l - sos

edit - also, what are the exact errors, or problems? a screenshot would help.

Well im trying to update windows mce 2002 to 2005. every time i try to install an update i get errors like

0.406: Setup cannot continue because one or more pre-requisites required to install Update Rollup 1 failed. For More details check the Log File C:\WINDOWS\MC05Upd1.log

    or

KB925766 Setup encountered an error: Setup cannot continue because one or more prerequisites required to install KB925766 failed. For More details check the Log File c:\windows\KB925766.log

months ago i had a problem with windows update. over like 80 of them kept failing to install but i found this site and got it fixed. turned out to be malware. but with this i dont know but im thinking its something simple. i even have an extra cd that came with my windows software titled "windows xp media center edition (updates for version 2005) but when i try to install it i get a message that says "This upgrade can only be run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005". microsoft.com is so confusing to me. so much for windows update", i hate this.

When i go to my computer and right click it and go to properties it says "microsft windows xp media center edition version 2002 service pack 2. i read somewhere that even if you have 2005 installed it will still say 2002. is this true?:confused thanks for the replies guys, really appreciate them.:)

A couple of last tricks up my sleeve. The first is Scannow which searches your OS system for missing files and replaces them (Start > Run and type sfc /scannow) you will have to have your original disk in the drive to do this and it can be a real pain if half your files are from 2002, and the other from 2005 versions, but your worried mainly about missing 2002 files so skip or ignore the ones it can't seem to find.

The other is a complete non-destructive reinstall of the system files. Since MCE is basically XP with some added components it should work. Fred Langa makes this tutorial, he used to work for MS and now helps others to get around its foibles.

    http://www.informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897

Since this replaces all your system files you will have to get all your critical updates again from the MS update site, but all your files and downloads will remain intact. If you hit a snag following the directions, if a page is not there as described in the tutorial, it may not work for MCE. What ever you do, do not choose the first repair option (the one Langa tells you to skip) it will erase all your data and you might as well have done a clean install.

I tried Scannow it got done scanning like 98% and then asked me to put in disc 2 and when i did it says the cd i put in is wrong. i tried cleaning it but no luck. i don't get it cd 1 was working. u have any idea what the prob is? for now i will try the Fred Langa link u gave me. thanx again.

Its possible that your cd2 is either corrupt or missing files from the getgo, therefore your problems. It doesn't happen often but bad disks do get into the market.

When I get a file not found (or in your case disk2 wrong disk) I usually hit the retry button over and over and sometimes that gets it going.

I suspect that you will end up having to replace the 2002 version with 2005 though. I doubt you will get much help from Microsoft.

hey Appzalien thanks for the help. when i first installed windows it kept saying that a certain file couldn't be found and then restart. i kept trying and eventually it worked so maybe if i keep trying it will work like you said.

do you think i still need to do the second thing you mentioned.

and another thing, what do you mean replace 2002 version with 2005

    thanks again for helping me:)

If you have a legitimate copy of MCE2002 and it entitles you to updates to 2005, why not download a 2005 iso and use your 2002 key to register it. I doubt MS would send you a new 2005 disk but there are options on the internet to get one on your own. If your key is good for 2002 it should be good for 2005 as well. Its sort of like having XP pro and slipstreaming it with SP2 and all the critical updates, Its no longer the original disk but its your serial that registers it.

MCE 2005 has an update called "MCE2005 rollup2", could MCE 2002 also have a rollup? Perhaps if it does, your version has to have the rollup installed before it can be updated to 2005, and those are your missing files.
