Can't update adaware or spybot

I was following the link about the step by step spyware/trojan/malware removal and in downloading spybot and ad-aware it said to check them for updates. Every time I check for updates the programs freeze. What is going on?

Manually download the update. Download below,

Ad-aware SE referencefile SE1R28
Note: Extract this to the installation directory of Ad-Aware SE

Spybot Search and Destroy Detection Update 2005-2-16
Note: Just run this and it should install this to the installation directory of Spybot S&D

After you complete this, procede with the scans.
