I posted this 2 days ago on eightforums.com but no replies have been forthcoming. So I am now posting on Major Geeks and Windows Secrets Lounge.

I have had Windows Update set to inform me when important upgrades are available.

When I went to download and install the latest batch it was unsuccessful. I got error code 8007371B.
Update history had a long list of failures.

I found many references to this problem via Google and tried many of them, all to no avail.

I decided to refresh the operating system but was unable to do so. I can't see the refresh option anywhere.

The operating system was re-installed by an I.T.company a few months ago after it froze and I couldn't boot it. They have installed it under local Administrator user account. I wonder if that might be the reason that I don't see the Refresh option. But whatever the reason, what do I need to do to refresh the system?

Have you already tried using the Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter??
See the paragraph headed 'Run the troubleshooter'
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/how-solve-connection-problems-windows-update

    If that doesn't work, then:
Have you already tried to repair any system files using sfc /scannow?
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/929833

You need to state clearly any and all steps and the results you have already tried before you posted here. It is not sufficient to anyone helping you simply to say 'I tried many of them' witout specifying what those were, and what the final failure messages were.
(All the above options are clearly suggested on both those other forums, before even posting)

This makes it 3 fora we need to check replies on [sigh].

    Why bother?
The poster hasn't bothered to say what steps - if any - they have tried to resolve it, nor whether they have tried the many steps posted on both those other forums or even official Microsoft forums.
You can only lead a horse to water...

    Why bother with anything?

How about education: for the OP and for anyone else who might look and want to be of some help.

Yes, I ran the troubleshooter twice. Each time it reported having fixed problems.
I have now run it again and, the problems it claims to have fixed are in the two screenshots:

    update repair 2.jpg

My internet connection isn't giving any trouble either.

I also an the system file checker which reported no problem.

I have just run it again and it encountered problems. The log is unintelligible to me.

Because we would have to wait for the answers - now provided - that any person with the problem would have to provide in order to help them. :)

Did you try any of the manual reset options given on the threads in eightforums and windowsecrets?

Started the manual reset procedure. In step 2, after net stop appidsvc, the response was "The Application Identity service is not started. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521."

I did so, the result being "The *** service is not started."

I continued, skipping steps 4 & 5 in accordance with step 4's advice.

I got as far as the 3rd item in step 6 "regsvr32.exe mshtml.dll", which gave the response, in a separate window,
The module "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entryu-point DIIRRegisterServer was not found.
Make sure that "mshtml.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.

I don't know how to do that.

Then you can count yourself very fortunate that the OP deigned to reply on this particular forum then - otherwise you would have needed to have gone a-hunting should you have wished to provide any help to the OP that had not already been provided.

The CBS.log file attached points towards the Macrovision (DRM) driver/details being at fault.

    Thank you satrow.
I am carrying out some checks suggested on the other forum, so I will turn my attention to that driver if necessary.

mshtml.dll is a core component of IE, the 'entry point not found' might indicate a file version mismatch, corruption, maybe a malware infection.
