Can't Update in Windows 7 HP SP1

I recently went through a malware removal procedure and started checking out how this system was running.

The first thing I attempted was to do a Windows Update which gave me an error saying windows couldn't update due to the update service not running and that I needed to reboot. After reboot, still same error message! I looked in services and saw that the Windows Update service was running, set for Automatic with Delayed Start. I also checked the dependencies and saw that everything was running.

I assumed I might have a corrupt "download" folder so I renamed the current one to "download_old", rebooted and verified windows created a new one. Still, I received the same error message.

After the system sat running idle for about 24hrs, I clicked on Windows Update, and the Update dialog window came up but would not finish loading, just stayed blank. I have to start Task Manager to end the process.

I was thinking of downloading and running Windows Repair from Tweaking.com but I thought I should ask first!

 

I was going to suggest a windows repair, using the install disc. But tweaking's tool looks like it might do the job. Be sure to report back and tell us how it went.

 

OK, ran windows repair and got update running again!

Only issue that came out of that process was a chkdsk error I seem to be getting at startup...everytime! I'm going to try running it from the command line instead. Does anyone happen to know if there is a way to "unschedule" chkdsk at startup?

Irolleyes I also noticed that this computer has Norton 360 on it and it has expired! No protection, no firewall...nothing! Guess I'll work on that as well.

 

Don't look like the chkdsk error is going to be that simple! Looks like I'll have to start a new post in the hardware threads.
