Can't Update Microsoft Security Essentials

    md2lgyk I can't follow the rules

    Just installed MSE a couple of days ago. Immediately updated it and all seemed well. Today it won't update, giving me instead Error 0x80070422 (something about unable to start the update service). What gives? I've made no changes to the computer since installing and updating the program. And MS's online help is confusing to navigate.

    Weird, is this the new version 2.0 of MSE?

    Do you have any 3rd party firewall software installed if so what? if you disable it does that help?

    Could try this from John Barnett (a respected tech writer and MVP)HERE

    I believe what I have is the latest version since I just installed it. My firewall is PC Tools (free). I did not have to disable it to download MSE or to do the intial update.

    I did find some troubleshooting information online. It mostly dealt with resetting IE settings and making IE the default browser. I don't even use IE. Will check out your link.

    Well, your link provided the solution. I should've known the Windows Automatic Update service would be used for MSE updates. I usually have it disabled since my pc running XP Home has an AMD processor and won't tolerate SP3.
