Can't Update Windows After Reformat Of The Hd

Early this year I had to replace the HD on my Win 7 Home Prof Hewlett Packard computer. After a reformat of the old drive, new HD installed and formatted, backup performed and all the windows updates for the past 8-9 years were in place I ran into problem after problem. The latest was that I thought all the updates were downloading on regular schedule but a few weeks ago I found that they had not been downloaded for several months. I spent the next couple of weeks trying everything I could find on the Internet to get Windows Update service working again and nothing would solve the problem. I finally decided my only option was to start all over and again reformat the HD. After doing this I am now in worse shape than ever. The Windows Update service is not working at all (before it was showing the updates but not installing them) – now it will not even check for updates. The main error at present is the Windows Update screen shows red - no updates available – and when I try to check for updates it tells me the update program is not running. Research on that error gave me a number of options but none of them are working because I get this: YOUR BROWSER IS OUT OF DATE. Definitely a catch 22 as I cannot run updates to get IE back to current status and without it I can’t run any updates.

I don’t understand this at all since there was no problem getting the windows updates started up again the first time I did the reformat. All of this started up because I was trying to get into position to move from Win7 to Win10. If I can’t get back to current then I seriously doubt I will be able to pull off the Win10 download. On top of all this, I can’t get my backup program reinstalled due to missing system updates I can’t download. Anyone out there up to this challenge? I would greatly appreciate a helping hand and time is running out…

A number of us here at the Forums had problems with Windows 7 Updates. We used wsus offline update (available here at MG's) to "kick-start" Updates in Win 7. Once we had done that, the update process went much better.

Thank you for your reply - unfortunately I don't understand it. =^..^= Can you give me a link or something to this solution? Thanks!

Here's the link to download WSUS Offline Update from Major Geeks:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/wsus_offline_update.html

Run the Update Generator after unzipping the folder. Select Windows 7, the proper architecture (x86 [32-bit] or x64 [64-bit]) for the architecture of Windows 7 you're running and whether you want to include .Net Framework, MSSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), Definition Updates and Visual C redistributables.

Select to create ISO and then burn the ISO to DVD (NOT CD — the ISO will be too large for CD) once it's created.

Run the updater from the DVD. Select what you want it to update. Select Automatic Restart and Recall and OK out of the message box. This will allow wsus to install prerequisites and continue installing updates it acquired.

Once wsus completes, it will delete a temporary Administrative account it creates and you'll be back at your normal Desktop. From there, you should be able to run Windows Update normally and get the remainder of the updates you're missing to be able to upgrade to Windows 10.
