About two weeks ago, my McAfee failed to auto update. Message said I needed to reinstall. I went to website and tried to download and got a connection error. After contacting McAfee support, they removed a-squared, tried to download McAfee, got the same error as I did and told me it was a Microsoft problem.

Now I do to Microsoft and find that auto updates are not working there either. I contact support and we keep going through "check proxy settings" and uninstall all third party software. No go. I also cannot connect to malewarebytes.org, and a few others.

The IT guy at work had me try a few things including combofix with no results.

Tonight I uninstalled a bunch of stuff. I ran MCPR.exe from McAfee (downloaded from work), I ran appremover, I then came here and went through the read and run first. The scans didn't seem to find any thing. Also, I am on a home PC using DSL.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...Gary

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Too bad McAfee does not know too much about malware removal. :( Nor MS.

You have a couple left overs from having AVG and Symantec installed which we will cleanup below too.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: DeviceVM Url Search Hook - {0063BF63-BFFF-4B8F-9D26-4267DF7F17DD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dvmurl.dll
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0EBBBE48-BAD4-4B4C-8E5A-516ABECAE064} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{AE842AE7-F6CB-4FD6-8A1D-79073025EA2A}: NameServer = 93.188.164.89,93.188.166.73
    O23 - Service: Norton Internet Security - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.0.0.125\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

First of thanks for SUPER Quick reply!! Second, Only tried Microsoft Update and it connected (YEAH!!) I will try others to further confirm.

I'll attach the new logs for your review.

If I'm free of this massive headache, what are your recomendations...
Up till now, I've had good luck with McAfee for VS but am now leary.

    Malwarebytes, A-Squared, AdAware, AVG...???

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you like McAfee, it is up to you. However, based on their obviously inadequate tech support who tried to blame Microsoft when the problems were a DNS Hijacker and a TDSS rootkit which are well known to any average malware fighter and the fact that their software does not even detect any problem let alone remove it....... well I think those facts speak for themselves. ;)

Definitely a big no to A-Squared which has way to many false detections. And a big no to Ad-Aware which as been very inadequate for a couple years now.

AVG is not highly recommended since it can be a massive resource hog. It is a major contributor to getting threads here about malware causing a PC to be slow and the problem is not malware but is rather AVG.

Purchasing Malwarebytes is a good idea to add good anti-malware protection but it is not an antivirus program nor is it a firewall and you need both. See the suggestions in the final step of my below final instructions.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
