Can't use Windows Updates

Can't seem to get WIndows Update to work. Haven't used WIndows Update in a while, at least three months or so. Since then, the only thing that has changed is I'm now on DSL, so perhaps some IE settings have changed?

Heres what happens when I try to use Windows Update...

"Keep your computer up to date. Check to see if you need updates for Windows, your hardware or your devices."

I click on Express, then it responds with...

"To use this latest version of Windows Update, you will need to upgrade some of its components. This version provides you with the following enhancements to our service..."

I then click on the "Download and Install now" button.

The box pops up and say "Updates are being installed", a progress bar appears for about two seconds and then it says "Updates were unable to be successfully installed" "The following updates were not installed"....Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

I click on the close button, and the following appears...

"Review Your Installation Results. Failed Updates
For help installing an update successfully, see the solution under each problem description."

Problem: Please check your update history for a description.

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

But thats it. It doesn't give me any reason why it didn't work. I set all IE settings to default. Any suggestions as to what I can try to make it work?

Thanks,

-Steve

Thanks for the link. I tried every single step and it still won't work, except now after it fails and I go to "Review Your Update History", it tells me "You have not yet installed updates from this website or by turning on automatic updating on your computer. To select and install updates now, go to our Home page."

Great. Does that mean I somehowremoved all of the previous updates? There used to be dozens and dozens that would appear in the Update History section!

I have no idea why that happens with WUS thinking you have no updates installed.

Try these:

Fix 1

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll

REBOOT

Fix 2

regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

REBOOT

FIX 3

Unistall SP2, then reinstall SP2

Thanks Shadow.

Tried all three, and none worked. Reinstalling SP2 was a nightmare. After I got my video drivers back, I went to the Windows Update page, and the exact sequence of events occured once again. For whatever reason, it will not download the Validation Tool, and therefore I can't get any other updates.

Any other suggestions?

Heres something...
When I go back to the Update site, choose Express and then view the necessary updates, it lists the Validation Tool and Windows Installer 3.1 but it lists them as Downloaded, ready to install.

So is there a way to kind of "force-install" them?

Heres the contents of the Details box...

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
The Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is the application installation and configuration service for Windows. The additional features in version 3.1 help make creating, distributing, and managing updates to applications easier and more efficient.

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your Windows installation by checking Windows Product Identification and Product Activation status. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

Thanks again,

You can do a manual download of the Windows Installer, WGA is an ActiveX control that can be installed when downloading certain items from MS.

OK. I did that, and it seemed to work. After that I went back to the WU page, and actually got farther that I had before. This time it downloaded 19 updates, but then said 0 were installed!

Heres a copy and paste of the exact message that appears. Whats strange though, is that about 50% of this message doesn't actually appear. Only when I cut and paste, the output actually has added text.

Do you have Automatic Updates enabled?

All those updates can be manually downloaded and installed; I know it's a PITA.

Well, I tried updating with Firefox, and that worked flawlessly.

So I guess it's got to be something to do with my IE settings, right?

I'll worry about it later I guess. At least for now I can continue to use Firefox.

Anyway, thanks again for all your help last night Shadow.

After going through the firefox windows update, I'd double check with IE to see if they indeed did get installed.

I know of a few other tricks to get windows update to work, but since you used the FF method, there is no need to get into them.

I'd highly recommend trying a windows update with IE as soon as you can, to see if something that was downloaded had fixed your present issue.

I also find that a repair installation is a easy fix (though, I tend to do this, just before I hit my head through the wall :) )
