Have a 2005 Tundra double cab with stock stereo. I would like to replace it but have no idea what to get. I do know that I would like it to play mp3's/cdr's and possibly dvd's. Maybe a usb connection on the front so I could just load some mp3s on a stick and play tunes that way, don't know if thats possible.

In the past I have had Pioneer decks with amp built in. Not sure who makes good stuff anymore. Just would like to rock out without installing a bunch of amps, etc in my truck.

Also removable face would be good unless there is some newer alternative to this so it won't get ripped off.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks!

I bought an Alpine for my last car in England...was the best darn system I ever had in a car....a little pricier, but worth it.

I second that - I'm Alpine all the way for head units.

Alpine :) You cant go wrong, most head units can push out 200watts which is fine for most things, you'll want it to fit though so check they make a facia for your car model if it needs one,put couple of 6X9's on the back shelf send all the bass to the back and split the midrange\treble between front tweeters and door midrange and the 6X9's

I'm not sure what are good amps anymore,my brother had a Directed amp and it was the best stereo I'v heard, but it was professionally fitted with a cerwin vega 12inch sub and 2 cirwin vega 6X9's

We use Krunch/Alpine amps to run subs, work the best as they produce the best response and have good power. Any Pioneer/Kenwood sub is great.

Also, Kenwood make some nice head units.

Been looking online at crutchfield. Looks like every head unit on the planet wasn't made for my truck. No wireharness thing either, has to be spliced. Probably something Toyota did to make you buy their head units.

Punks! lol. I'll find something. And you guys/gals are right. The Alpines look awesome.

Yeah, don't play it too loud coming through my neighborhood ;)

My .02 also is Alpine; couple of the bubblepuppies I work with have them installed and they do rokk.

Hey Randy, Abby is in NY but she wants us to have a teleconference when she gets back; you savvy on that? :)

200 watts total maybe (at peak, which is not RMS), but not 200 watts per channel. Typical wattage is around 16-23 RMS and 40-52 peak wattage / per speaker.

But, if you can, I'd get an amp, and bypass the built in amp in the receiver. Most built in amps are not anything to be excited about.

    Also, I own a Sony.

If you do that your wasting power you can run the the front door speakers and tweaters straight from the head unit amp on the front channel and use the pre amps to run the 6X9's and sub

Yeh your right about the watts but 100watts rms inside a car is quite loud :)

Actually, most decent receivers have 3 sets of rca outputs. I use 1 set run to my amp for my subs, and the other 2 sets for my front and rears. So, essentially, I'm not really wasting anything.

But, if one is on a budget, then yes, use the internal amp on the receiver, for all the speakers EXCEPT for the sub, and use an amp for it.

    IMHO. :)
