cataloging my pic's

Okay, I have many thousands of pic's totalling well over 100gig. Apart from buying a bigger drive which would eventually also become too small, the only way is to store them on removeable discs with a simple numbering system - year and disc number ( that way they are allways sequential, ie, 1971disc27 through to 2002disc12 etc.

Now I have used both adobe photoshop album and picasa, both have benefits. However I would like to just use one or the other (I'm a simple person!).

I am tending towards picasa, however there is one major drawback and that is representation of these offline pic's.

With ps album i am able to import thumbnails of each image on a disc and note that it is on removeable media. Album then keeps that thumbnail and details such as date taken, size etc so that I can view without the disc being loaded.

Unfortunately picasa copies the full sized pic to a folder on the hard drive - I may just as well fill my hard drive with the originals.

I wonder if anyone knows how I could replicate the adobe system?. I have considered making a catalogue folder and placing copies of everything on it but for several reasons I am not too impressed with that idea.

Some time ago i did a research of picture management software and found a very cool app called IMatch - http://www.photools.com/

It might seem a bit complicated but it has really HUGE possibilities. You can add categories, perform simple editing and much more.

Long story, better try a demo
