CCleaner - corrupt file

I run CCleaner pretty regularly and have never had a problem using it. I keep it up to date and find it is a great tool for cleaning my temps out and keeping my registery clean.

However, I ran it today and got the following 'alert bubble' in the lower right corner of my desktop when I ran it:

"The file or directory \Recycled\Di382.RAR is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility"

Well, I ran the 'chkdsk utility' and rebooted and ran CCleaner again and got the same alert. I checked my recycle bin and the Icon itself is showing that the bin is NOT empty, but when I unhide hidden files in file/folder options and open the recycling bin it is empty.....no Di382.RAR file.....or any others for that matter. Now when I right click the Recycle Bin Icon and select 'Empty Recycle Bin' it asks if I am sure I want to delete "WINDOWS"....

I have done several searched on all of my drives (both internal and external) to locate the corrupt unreadable (Di382.RAR) file but have not been able to find it.

I have scowered the web looking for a solution to the recycling bin icon showing as 'not empty' when it appears to be empty and have had no luck in correcting the issue.

Any on have any ideas on correcting the Recycling Bin Icon issue and/or why CCleaner keeps throwing me the 'corupt file' alert when I can not find the file it is saying is corrupt?

IF XP try right-clicking the recycle bin and select properties. Under each tab: Select "Do not use the Recycle Bin". Reboot. Run CCleaner. If no error go ahead and turn the recycle bin back on. If error then maybe chkdsk /f and then CCleaner.

    Yep, XP Home.

I set the recycle bin to "Do not use..." ran CCleaner and got the same alert.
    then
I ran chkdsk /f from the Run window and scheduled it for next reboot...rebooted and the chkdsk ran. Then I reran CCLeaner again and got the alert again.

I am still (after these steps) getting the message "Are you sure you want to delete 'WINDOWS' " when I attempt to empty the recycle bin and the icon is still showing as full when the bin is empty.

If you delete hidden C:\Recycled folder it will be recreated on next boot. It might be worth a try. (I thought turning off Recycle Bin flushed all files but it doesn't--I saw a few remaining files when testing just now).

In explorer window Tools>Folder Options>View tab Check box "Show hidden files" and uncheck "Hide protected OS files" Apply and OK.

Delete C:\Recycled or C:\Recycler folder. Use SHIFT + DELETE. Reboot. Go back and hide protected files and hidden files. Try CCleaner.

    ******
The Di282.rar could be referencing something on an external but deleting the Recycled folder should remove the reference. The only other thought would be to use the registry function in CCleaner to see if it finds any errors. I don't think it is a registry problem though but most likely the INFO file in the Recycled folder.

    I have a 'RECYCLER' folder....

    No "Recycled' folder.

When I (try to) delete the 'RECYCLER' folder I get a warning asking if I am sure I want to delete 'desktop.ini' then it says If I delete it my computer or one of my programs may not work correctly. Is it OK to delete this file?

Yes, I just tried it before posting. I deleted Recycler and said yes to all. When I rebooted there was a new Recycler folder and my Recycle Bin worked fine.

You are OK to delete the Recycler folder as I said above. I have no "Recycled" folder on my computer and see from google that some XP have Recycler and some Recycled.

Is your error "Recycled/Di382.RAR? If so...Interesting that you have only a Recycler folder and an error for Recycled. If you search for recycled do you get any results?

Shift-Deleted the Recycler folder from 'c' drive and went to each of my active external hard drives and deleted Recycler folder from each...

    Rebooted...

Ran CCleaner again and got the same alert message.

All previous symptoms are still present....Alert Message, Recycle Bin Icon not changing and WINDOWS being confirmed when emptying empty recycle bin.

Would uninstalling CCleaner and do a fresh install be something to try?

I'm not sure what to do. A new copy of CCleaner can't hurt but the error is probably from the command that they use to empty the recycle bin. I was looking around and the "i" in Di382.rar indicates it is referencing a file from your I: drive. But deleting the RECYCLER folder on C: plus all your externals should have achieved deleting the reference[I don't think deleting on the externals was even necessary]. I don't think having the drive plugged in makes any difference.

I'll have to look around a bit more on the web. I answered initially because I thought it might have been as simple as turning off the Recycle Bin. You might want to take a look here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm scroll down to Recycle Bin section. By deleting the Recycler folder you have essentially already deleted the Di382.rar by my understanding. Maybe the Repair/replace recycle bin fix http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (#64 right column) would do some good?

I'll look around later and see if I can find something by searching the idea that the icon is showing full when it should be empty. I seem to remember this being a fixable situation that might have bearing on your problem.

Sorry, I can't give a more precise answer at this time.

I visted Kellys-Korner yesterday and tried all the Recycling Bin 'tricks' and got the same results.....I may take one more run through them though and see if I missed something.

I will take a look through my 'I' drive and see if there is something 'hidding' in there.

Thanks for your help this far, I too am going to keep looking and see if I find anything.

I found where the little bugger is hidding!

It is in fact on my 'External I' drive and when I unhide folders and scan the recyclED folder on the 'I' dirve I get an alert for a "SDFiles.exe - Corrupt File The file or directory \Recycled\Di382.RAR is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility.

I am sure I can run the chkdsk on my external 'I' drive right?
Just go to run and type in chkdsk /i ......right?

I will wait to do this until I get confirmation this is correct.

  12. SLoTH_XVX

It is definatly on my external 'I' drive!!

I unplugged the 'I' drive and deleted the Recycler folder from my 'c' drive and rebooted.

Then ran CCleaner again and it ran cleanly and the recycle bin on my desktop is behaving properly and is no longer asking if I am sure I want to delete 'WINDOWS'.....however.....I have only located the file not removed it.

Once I plug the drive ( I ) back in and place something in the recycle bin all the symptoms return.

When I scanned the Recycled folder on the 'I' drive with Search and Destroy it finds 3 files that are not visable (even when unhidding everything); 'desktop.ini , INFO2 and (the dreaded) Di382RAR. When the scan finishes it finds nothing on any of the files (Malware or Heuristic).

    Ok good! Nice work. :)

With files unhidden if you go to I:\Recycler how many long named folders like "S-1-5-21-1801674531-1957994488-1606980848-1005" do you have? If only one or two select the first one and right-click choose rename and then right-click in the title box and choose copy then click outside the title box to exit rename mode.

    Now Open Start>Run>CMD
in CMD window type cd i:\recycler
CD "PASTE YOUR LONG FOLDER NAME HERE"
Dir [just to see if di382.rar is listed probably not]
Dir /ah [NOTE: the "/" direction and space between "r" and "/". If Di382.rar is listed it can be deleted]
    attrib -h di382.rar
    del di382.rar

I tried to edit but it was too late. Go ahead and delete INFO2 while you are there just to get it out of the way in case it is corrupt. Might save a step to do it at the same time.

Chkdsk /f I: would be the syntax to fix errors. Or My Computer>right-click drive I: select Properties>Tools>Check for errors>Select both boxes.

    *****
Just curious is your I: drive Fat32 or NTFS? [I'm wondering about why some drives have a Recycled folder rather than er.]

I am going to start out with the easy question; Yes 'plodr', am the only one using the computer. XP home with only one user set up with Admin. "rights".

Now for 'sach2's easy question; yes my 'I' drive is set as a "FAT" drive while the others are "NTFS" drives.

This is where it loses the easy "tag".....

I opened the 'I' drive with all unhidden and locate the 'Recycled' bin/folder, but it is "empty". There is nothing (visable) in it......but if I right click on the 'Recycled' bin/folder and choose to Scan it with Search and Destroy, the scan finds three files to scan; desktop.ini , INFO2 and Di382RAR. There are no other files found or in this folder.

I did run a chkdsk on the 'I' drive, but it made no change. The issues still persist.

I am unable to delete any of the files in the 'I' drive 'Recycler' bin/folder because I have no way to 'select' them....

Try using the CMD prompt to see the files as in post #13 above.

    Open Start>Run>CMD
in CMD window type cd i:\recycled
    dir /ah

Do you see your three files? Or a folder/directory with a long name?

Not sure if I entered this correctly or not....it looks like the info I get is for my 'c' drive not my 'i' drive.

Here is a screen of the command prompt window result.

Yes, that is the C: drive.

Try at the prompt ...settings> i:
You should then have a I:> prompt
    Then dir /ah
Do you see Recycled folder/dir? If so cd recycled
    then dir /ah
Are the rar and INFO file listed?

Hmm, I don't see the .rar file???

I'm sorry this is so complicated I don't know why files show under certain commands and not others.

    Try at the I:\Recycled> prompt
    attrib -h INFO2
    del INFO2
dir /as (see if the rar shows up if not Reboot and try CCleaner again)

  23. SLoTH_XVX

I am not able to get to the "i:\Recycled>" prompt

I can only manage to get to "i:>" prompt

(I do not know how I got it the last time....???)

When I try to enter \Recycled to the i:> prompt it says:
'\Recycled' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

I am ignorant when it comes to command prompts and how to get to where I need to be.....sorry.

After I enter "cmd" into run and hit enter I don't thin I am following what I need to enter at the first prompt to get me to the i:\recycled prompt. I stumbled into it last time.

It is not your fault it is a quirk about hiding this particular system folder. It doesn't give an error message just ignores a valid command. That is what is making this take so long commands that should work don't such as the hidden files not showing in Explorer even with Show hidden and system files marked?

    In CMD try:

I: (gets you to the I:> prompt)
CD recycled will get to the I:\recycled prompt [CD = Change Directory]
attrib -h -s INFO2 [change attributes to not hidden not system protected for file INFO2]
    del INFO2 [delete INFO2]
dir /as [directory listing of files that are system protected--to see if the rar file is a system file--which I doubt]
dir /ah [do this one more time before leaving CMD to make sure the rar is not there then go ahead and reboot and run CCleaner to see if the INFO2 file alone is the problem]

Sorry, my command prompt skills are a bit rusty.

The reason the rar is not seen is because I am only giving you dir /ah.

If you have already done the above then go back in
    I:
    cd recycled
dir [di382.rar should show this time :-o]
    del di382.rar

  26. SLoTH_XVX

    SLoTH_XVX Private First Class

No problem, at least you have rust....I got nothin'

    I re-ran with:
    cd recycled
    dir
    del di382.rar

...and as soon as I hit enter on the last prompt another Alert window popped up. This one pretty much said the same thing(s) as before:

"cmd.exe - corrupt file The file or directory \Recycled\Di382.RAR is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility."

I'm a little stumped. You said you ran chksdk /f I:

I'd like to see if you can move the file so that it is out of the recycled folder so that a Windows utility might work.

    I:
    cd recycled
    move di382.rar ..\di382.rar

  28. SLoTH_XVX

I ran 'chkdsk /f i:' directly from a comand prompt and got the following 'responce'

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume> (Y/N)"

    I selected 'N'

    What does this mean?

    ----
After I selected 'N' the following came up:

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? Y/N

Again I entered 'N'....because I wasn't sure about the first question....and I figured I could run it again if needed.

So should I choose 'Y' and force the dismount? and what does it mean?

  29. sach2

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Unmounting a volume just makes it unavailable to explorer. You would be fine saying yes to either one. It is the same as trying to run chkdsk on C: it can't be done while you have Windows loaded and has to be done after a reboot, before Windows starts.

I believe chkdsk /f is the same as My Computer>right-click I:>Properties>Tools>Check disk for errors and checking both boxes.

    ***
Just for fun try moving the file to see if you get an error before the chkdsk.

I wish I could say I knew exactly what worked. rolleyes
I'll have to read through the whole thread again tomorrow and figure out what would have made the process simpler.

I did learn a bit about the Recycle Bin and how and where it stores files. Especially, that all the references aren't stored on the OS drive. :)

Thank you for going through the whole process to resolution. It gave me a chance to refresh my memory on a some command line syntax and learn a few things about chkdsk.
