I have been using the ccleaner free version for some time. Now when I try to run it I get a message it quit running I deleted what I had installed and tried to reinstall got the same message.
I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and if so how to correct it.

At the same time if there if a free registry cleaner that is workable for someone that is 81 I would appreciate that as well.

That's not normal behaviour. Have you checked your system for malware?

I've never encountered the behavior you've described either and I have it installed on 4 Windows 7 computers, 2 XP computers and either 1 or both Windows 2000 computers.

Try the portable version and post what happens.

It can be run from a USB stick. I carry it with me in case I need to clean some things up on a senior citizen's computer when I go to help them.

Did you ever follow through on the August 24th suggestion to check your computer for malware?

If not, you need to take care of this before you do anything else.
