Device manager says it's working properly but it's not working.
I have uninstalled the driver and rebooted, it still says it's working properly but it doesn't work.

Any clues on how to fix it without replacing it?

    Greetings, mikehairfield.

We need to know the make and model # of your machine and any other pertinent hardware specs, and the operating system version and Service Pack #.

By 'not working', what do you mean? Is the drive completely dead, or does it not perform certain functions?

And, is there the possibility of any recent event (such as any hardware or software installation) causing the problem?

It's a Dell Dimension E510, Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3,
    HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA4164B DVD/CD-R
It does not read or acknowledge that there is a disk in the drive.

It came back and said "Troubleshooting can not continue because of an error ocurred" This doesn't apply to this computer.

Does this happen with any media? Have you tried booting to your Windows disk?

It doesn't work with any media and I tried booting from my windows disk also.

You might try reinstalling/updating the firmware. Download and run this Dell file, see if your symptoms change.

    That ain't good.

One more shot: try booting into Safe Mode, see if the drive recognizes any media - maybe some 3rd-party software is killing the drive.

Ok, since the MS fix didn't complete, clear the filters manually:

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    4. In the right pane, click UpperFilters. (Note: You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.)
    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters. (Note: If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further.)
    8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    10. Exit Registry Editor.
    11. Restart the computer

See if your symptoms change. If not, about the only thing I've got left software-wise is reinstalling your chipset drivers - go back to the Dell driver link, and find the Chipset driver. It'll probably be the Intel Update utility, which should find the correct software for your board. The utility may advise you that you've got current software on board, but you might try reinstalling anyway.

Do you know anyone who might have a discrete USB optical drive? If you could hook up another drive, that would pretty much cut your troubleshooting in half.

One more thought: open up the case, verify that all connections are secure. They should be fine since Windows sees the drive, but you never know.

Yeah, sometimes you got to bite the bullet. Keep checking here, though - some of the gurus might jump onboard and come up with a fix.

    Good luck!
