My CD/DVD drive has disappeared from My Computer and my device manager list. My BIOS still picks it up, and it still has power. I realise there is help topic here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=145532 and I have followed the steps but there are no lower or upper filters in my registry. I am also aware of this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=165449 but i feel since the person didnt have theirs recognise in the BIOS it diverts from my problem. From reading other things it seems at this point I need to do a system restore but I am nervous of doing so.

The reason I am worried about doing a restore is, I recently installed norton internet security 2010 and afterwards norton utilities (my cd drive disappeared the day i did this) norton found a few evil trojans in my computer and removed them, I am worried that in a system restore i will lose norton and the viruses will run free on my poor computer again, and my cd drive will still not be working so i will be unable to reinstall it, aside from that i am worried that norton caused the problem somehow and the problem will occur again once i reinstall. Im really stumped about what to do and would really like some help and advice if anyone can offer it. Thankyou for taking the time to read about my problem.

Hey thanks for the link I was able to do all the scans apart from the malware antimalwarebits one, I attempted to update it manually and after that it just gave me an error and wouldn't open.

"An error occured. Please report the following code to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team Error code: 730 (0,0)"

I was also unable to do the rootrepeal one as it just caused my computer to crash. I will add the attachments of the other 3 logs.

The combofix one deleted alot of desktop_ini things I know these are from a super duper evil cruel virus i had a couple of years ago spoclsv.exe it's behaviour is described here, I'm am pretty sure I managed to get rid of it but I dont know since combofix picked all of that up if it was just remains or it means that it was somehow still effecting me. http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/RRDAJH28233352/SPOCLSV.EXE.html

I also need to admit that I uninstalled everything to do with norton that i had installed because it suddenly stopped working taking my internet connection with it, my net connection is fine after uninstalling, but my computer still thinks its running and combofix complained about this telling me it was running but norton no longer exists on my computer so i am unsure of this, i just ignored it and ran the scan anyway.

I use linux on my computer aswell as windows and linux can read my cd drive perfectly fine. I do know the cd drive vanished somewhere after i installed the norton utilities, it was either straight after that, or after i removed the viruses norton found, a thing i did notice in my device manager was a couple of exclamation marks next to primary IDE channel and secondary IDE channel, I don't know what these are or what they do or if they could be related in anyway, one of the viruses removed was called trojan.atapi or something similar the primary and secondary IDE channels say they have the device type: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I dont know if this is related to the virus norton removed with atapi in the name.

Sorry if my reply is confusing, Thankyou for taking the time to help me.

Well on the basis that all your valuable data is backed up, I personally would delete/uninstall the Primary & Secondary IDE Controllers in the Device Manager. Windows should redetect and install those drivers at reboot.

I am guessing that the optical drives (cd/dvd) which you have are IDE. You have not stated whether your HD(s) are IDE or SATA and given that you are not suffering any HD side effects, I am speculating that they are SATA.

Failing that and with reference to the Upper / Lower Filters reg key, it is possible to rebuilt that information on the basis of what type of burning software (or progs that can burn) you have eg EZCD, Nero, Winamp, iTunes.

    Good Luck
