    Hi-
I download cd's with itunes quite ofter. Last week it took almost an hour to download a cd which would normally take 10 min. Now the computer does not read the cd. I tried uninstalling and installing the driver, searching for new updates, etc. I then bought an ASUS portable CD/DVD player. It will not properly install. I tried everything. I have a DELL Optiplex 170.

    Greetings, bclark 1234...

More info about your situation will be helpful: Operating System and any installed Service Packs/Updates, malware and virus states, hardware specs...

Be advised: as this could very well turn out to be a malware or software issue, this thread may eventually be moved to one of those forums...

Windows XP. I recently installed spyware. My consern is if the cd drive is shot, why does the external CD drive not work.

    Thanks

You are going to have to explain that. Did you find spyware? Did you install some anti-spyware program? If it was an anti-spyware program, please mention the exact name. There are so many programs and confusion results if you don't mention the specific program.

As far as an external optical drive not working, I've run into that one on one computer (XP ) in which I cleaned off the Sony rootkit a few years back.
Since the user preferred to keep all the files and did not want a clean install, she took the computer back with the understanding that an optical, internal or external, would not work. I did all the usual fixes (usually you see the upper and lower filter fix) but could not get any optical drive to be recognized.

You install the software first, then plug it into the USB port. What happened when you did this?

If I click on CD player from the start menu it states that, "There is no CD ROM player attatched to this computer. CD player can not start.

Also, when I open I Tunes it states, " The registry settings used by the i tunes drivers for importing and burnings cd's and dvd's are missing. This can happen as a result of instaling other cd burning software. Please reinstall itunes.

I have done this several times, and the same message keeps popping up. Also, I don't recall installing any other cd burning software.

    Thanks

Your problem with the CD drive might be the result of running a registry cleaner, REGTool. Bad registry cleaners, as you discovered, remove registry items that are needed.

You should remove REGTool. I think to do this safely, the best thing to do is to start here
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
Then when you have run the proper tools and have the logs, start a new thread in the malware section
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35
One of the malware fighters will look over your logs and tell you how to safely remove everything that RegTools has put on your computer.

After that maybe you can do a repair install of windows.
I've never done this. The best I can do is point you to instructions.

Before I do what you suggest, it may be important to know that the issue was going to before I installed Reg tools.

    Thanks

Well one thing for sure, RegTool is certianly not helping your PC, it probably contains some form of malware. I would suggest getting any "junk" like that out of your system.

Have you looked at device manager? Press the windows logo key on the keyboard (the one that looks like microsoft windows logo), hold that down and press the Pause/Break on the keyboard. This will bring up the system properties window. Click on Hardware and then Device Manager. Look for anything related to your CD/DVD drive that has a yellow "!" or "?" This would indicate that a driver file is missing.

If you do see your CDDVD drive in yellow, double click on it and click on Update Driver or Reinstall Driver. Windows should reinstall the driver. May need to reboot.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I trying searching up updates, uninstalling, installing, many times. That is what someone first suggested when I first noticed the issue. It just says that the driver did not install properly. What drives me crazy is that I bought an external cd player and it won't install either. Every other aspect of my computer works great.

    Thanks

I removed Reg tools. You were right, it was mal ware. Thanks for the advice. Now at this point, the consern is that the cd player was not working before I downloaded Reg tools.

    Thanks

You have to distinguish between not working and not shown when you click my computer. Do you see an optical drive?

What software ins installed for using the drive? A computer with a CD/DVD includes some sort of software. If you put it in yourself and it is not an OEM, it would include a disk with software.

It reconizes the external cd player, goes through the motions, but will not install. It came with a install cd, but my cd player will not work, which brings me back to the orginal issue.

    Thanks

    Have a look here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Just click on the "fix it" button.

If this doesn't work DO NOT do a repair install of Windows, it will stop recognizing the CD drive during the install process and leave your computer in an unusable state. This is because a repair install does not delete the registry, the registry is where the problem lies. It is possible that a System Restore may fix the problem as well, however, I do not recommend this because your system has been had malware, which may restore some of the "bad stuff" back in the system.
