    Greetings all.

I had picked up a slew of viruses, the most vocal of which was kernels64.exe when my fiance downloaded a bunch of stuff to my computer. I followed the wonderful step by step guide here, and got rid of all the infections.

But, now my cd-drives won't work at all. They will open and close, but will not read a disc at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and the drivers are up to date. How can I fix this problem?

    What OS?

Do they show up in Device Manager?

Do they have a ? or ! next to them?

The OS is Windows XP Home Ed. w/SP2

Yes, they show up in the Device Manager Menu

No, neither drive has a ? or ! next to it.

Double click on thne entry of one of them. Go to the Driver tab. Chose driver details...

List the name of all the drivers shown.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys (check next to it)
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\GEARAspiWDM.sys (no check)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys (checked)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys (checked)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll (checked)

That is all that is in the details window.

Can the CD drive read discs in Safe Mode?

I notice you have iTunes installed. You might want to try uninstalling it while working on this.

Going into safe mode didn't help.

    Oh, and I deleted iTunes.

What error message do you get when you try to access the drive in My Computer?

It does not give me a error message, it just acts like I never put a disc in the drive. If you try to "open" the disc in the drive, a pop up with "Please put a disc in drive xx" appears, like the drive is empty.

Tried with 4-5 different discs, same result each time.

Oh, btw, I'm logged into my MSN now if that would be easier.

Well actually, I am out of ideas at this point. Any of the usual suspects have not panned out. There doesn't appear to be any third party driver interference, which usually causes this problem. Third party services were ruled out by Safe Mode. I assume one of these drives is a writer. Does it also give the please insert disc message, or does it open a blank window?

Well, in the writer drive, it won't give the "Please insert disc" message, but when you click "open" it just pulls up a blank window like the drive is empty.

Which means the CD writing service isn't malfunctioning. I'm sorry, I'm running into dead ends. :(

*nod* Well, I appreciate the help. Do you think that maby one of the viruses had something in it where it nukes the disc drives like that spyware from Sony?

Also, is there somewhere that I can look to see if the drives are "activated" like the services.msc function? The device manager says that the drives are functioning normally, they just wont read discs.

I'm also going to e-mail this thread to both the head geeks here, and to Microsoft's tech people, and see if they can help.

Well, if you want to test the hardware itself, see if you can boot from a CD, such as the Windows XP CD.

Well, I'll see what I can do with that then. I'll post my HijackThis log if it will help too.

Sorry, that was meant to be a link to my file site where I had it uploaded.

I've tried everything I can think of, so now I'm wanting to just re-format my HD and start all over again. It sucks, but if you are stumped, I sure as hell can't figure it out...:p

When I try to format the HD though, it pop's up a error message telling me that the drive is being used, and it cannot complete the formating. I went into msconfig, and unchecked everything under the services and startup tabs, then used the boot.ini tab, /safeboot (with minimal checked) and restarted the compy.

Still no dice on the reformat. Any idea what I need to do in order to get my HD formated? Is there a way I can "force" my HD to be formated?

Any help would be great, because I don't really want to have to pay the $$$ for a PC Tech to fix my comp for me...don't have that kind of cash laying around, lol.

Also, if anyone knows a way to repair my system so it can use the disc drives again, please let me know.
