CD/DVD drive won't recognise audio book cd

Hi folks

I think this is a hardware problem - my cd/dvd drive won't recognise some of the audio book cd's i recently purchased. It recognises some from the same collection though and recognises cd-roms, dvd's and normal music cd's. Can anyone help? I tried updating the driver.

I use windows xp sp3 on a toshiba satellite A100 laptop ( 3 yrs old) with a matshita dvd-ram uj-841s optical drive.

Do you mean that it will play some of the file but not others?

 

Hi pclover and thanks for your reply.

It's a single audio book on 10 CD's. I've only tried the first four. When I put the second in I get the usual sounds and all tracks on that particular cd appear in whatever software I am using (Windows Media Player, Fairstars CD ripper). With the third and fourth I get a different set of sounds for a short while then the drive stops. WMP says there is no disc in the drive and the files do not appear on any software. I cannot read any of the files.

Strange things is sometimes the first cd works, sometimes it doesn't, though even when it works WMP still says the cd has 0 bytes on it.

When the cd's don't work and I click on the icon for the dvd-ram drive in 'my computer' of windows i get the message 'the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error'

Could be bad discs. Do other discs play fine?

 

Yes, other discs work fine, music discs and dvd's. All the audio book discs work fine in my standalone dvd/cd player. It's only in my computer that they don't work.

Could it be that the audio book cd's are too large? - the one I can get to work is 694MB, the one that works sometimes is 763MB when ripped to WAV format (that's the size they appeared on the cd too on rip list in Fairstars cd ripper before being ripped).
