I recently downgraded a laptop from Vista32 to XpHome32, after much trouble I have got it to work finally. The formatting itself was a bit of trouble, had to actually change the drive from AHCI mode to IDE to get it to work. (Atleast that's what I was told to do) Moving along, got the drive working, formatted the computer, everything is up and running except for the cd/dvd drive. It reads perfectly, if I go into my computer>right click> Eject, it works fine. If I press the eject button on my laptop, my computer completely locks up and I have to hard boot it. I'm pretty much at the end of my wits, so any and all help/advice would be much appreciated.

most issues i see while searching are related to DLA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_Letter_Access and sonic burning program, do you have that installed? you might have some sort of conflict with the drive letter of the drive, go into the control panel/admin tools/computer management/storage and right click on the cd rom to change the drive letter. I have a habit of setting them to something higher like m: or n: just to make sure there's plenty of letters in between. just to be sure, go into the device manager, and remove the drive from the system, reboot, and let it reinstall.

    Thanks for the reply.

I renamed my drive to "K:" to assure that it's not a conflict on that part. I don't have that sonic burning program. I uninstalled the drive, rebooted and let it re-install it when I booted back up. Problem is still there, I am sad to report.

    Hi

In Device Manager do you have any Yellow ! Marks and if so what are they called?

What is your make and model Laptop? just thinking if its a really new laptop and uses SATA over IDE, then this could be the problem in that IDE mode is not working well with SATA hardware, would it not install in AHCI mode? with XP what you likely needed and this is where it becomes an issue is that you'd likely need the SATA drivers for the motherboard/PC on floppy disk, and with laptops not coming with floppy its a problem.

Also from the posts I have read with this issue, its not an easy one to fix when the laptops come built for Vista originally, have you checked with the laptop makers support if they have a fix for this?

There are no yellow marks in my device manager. Laptop is an "Acer Aspire 5810t" and I'm pretty sure that the problem is what you are saying. Before I formatted, it was running in AHCI mode, but for some reason, everytime I tried to format, it would just crash or hang. A friend told me to try running the format in IDE mode and that worked for me. Ever since then, the drive has not worked the way it should. And I looked, but I didn't see any fix on Acer's website for it, but I will check again.

I can't edit my last post, sorry for double posting this.

My problem has been fixed, I figured I would post here, as to help anyone else who might have this problem in the future. It was actually a pretty quick and painless fix. Go into Device Manager>Update Driver for the cd/dvd drive>manually choose the AHCI driver>let it restart your pc>Bios>Change to AHCI>Let it restart again.

After this, your windows will recognize the AHCI, install it, update it, tell you to restart your pc again. Upon coming back, everything should be perfect.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me here. :)
