cd & dvd not working

I have a cd and dvd drives connected by separate cables. When trying to use a cd
or dvd disk I have to reboot with the disc in either player to get either of them to read the disk. If I want to change to another disc, in order for the disc to be read, I once
again have to reboot. I have gone to device manager and uninstalled the drive and then let XPHESP2 find the "new" hardware. Still no luck, same thing happens. Also in device manager it shows that there are no "trouble" spots and that all devices are working properly. This is a new occurrance that has just cropped up. Since the drives are connected with seperate cables, I am at a loss. Have opened the case and checked all connections...twice...everything seems to be firmly seated. The dvd is a Toshiba whose site states that no additional drivers are needed with XP. The cd rom is a lite-on-lite. Any thoughts will be appreciated. David

I have the identical problem. Compaq Presario PC, Toshiba & Sony Drives and also a Maxtor 1 touch external hard drive running on USB cable. None of the drives will read. All will write. The Compaq web site says this can happen after downloading a window update. Which one I dont know? Compaq has and extensive list of steps to take to correct the problem and I have done them all with no luck. It is really crazy that the cd or dvd will read on boot up. I'm almost at the point of reformatting the hard drive???

I'm curious as to what type of motherboard and how many IDE connectors that you have. All the older ones that I have seen only have two IDE connectors, Channel 0 and Channel 1.
You said that you have the cdrom and dvd on different cables, are both set to master on their respective channels via the jumpers on the back of them? Where is your hard drive hooked up? :)

Mother board is an ASUS A7V133 with 2 IDE Connectors (UltraDMA/100 Support) and 2 IDE connectors(UltraDMA/100/Raid 0 or 1 Support). Both the cd and dvd drives are set to master via the jumpers. All of the drives have worked fine for the last year or so. The troubles started in the last couple of days. Nothing new has been added or changed. The only time I cracked the case was to make sure all connections were tight.

If both the CD & DVD are set to 'master' and on seperate cables, than I have to assume you boot from one of them, since your hard drive(s) must be slaves...so I really don't understand when you say they won't read. How else would you boot?

I don't know about the rest of you, but my first hard drive is always my master. My cd & dvd are on the same cable and set as master & slave (the one I do the most recording on is the master). This has worked well for me for many years. In fact, the only time I've ever had a problem was with a defective cd drive.

Try it...you might like it :)

    Hi,
stg is right this is the best way but if its been working for years the way it is I would try replacing the cable first then try other things.

Thanks for responding. I got to thinking about what might be accessing my removable drives and after some web diving came up with "in-Cd" not being compatable with sp2.....uninstalled it and all is well.

It must be a old version of "in-cd" cause version 3.39.0 I have works fine
