CD/DVD ROM Problem

Good Day All -
Have an HP Laptop running Win XP Home (Sp2). Last week the CD/DVD stopped working or sowe thought. It will not read a software CD or Music CD(known good), but it will play a DVD Movie! Only DVD movies appear to work.
Uninstalled and reinstalled driver/device. Still no go. Any thoughts?

Try a CD/DVD drive cleaner could just be a dirty lens. Are there any conflicts on the device manager? (press the Win Key + Pause Break key, click on the Hardware tab, then device manager.)

Hope that might help a little.

No confilicts on the Device Mgr. Can't understand why it will run a DVD Movie, but not run CD. Will clean as suggested. Still hoping for a software/firmware solution.

Go to Device Manager and go to properties of the drive.

Click on the driver tab and show driver details.

Give a full list of the drivers loading.

It will read any DVD, but will not read a CD. It spins and gives no error message, but none of the data or songs appear. Could it be hardware related even though it reads a DVD?
