Is the drive showing in My Computer and if not then right click on My Computer and click on Manage.

Is the drive showing in there?

Writing software can be a particular issue.
Otherwise, if you feel competent to open the computer -start by unplugging the computer from the main supply.Remove the side, and disengage the IDE cable, and power supply at the dvd end.
Then replace them, refit side, and plug, and restart, - see if that helps.
Otherwise there are so many reasons this can happen, that we could do with more information, to help resolve it.
Have you recently uninstalled In cd, Nero, or any other writing software.
Have you had a download from microsoft update, AVG antivirus etc:
Have you got XP, 2000, Windows 98 ?

Vista is a bit new , yet, I have delayed putting mine on, until I find more niggles.
It is worth trying the same trick as in XP, by going to device manager, , dvd drive, and uninstall , then restart computer, and let windows find new hard ware.
