Is the CD ROM a commercial or burned one? Are you sure it is a CD and not a DVD?
Does it do this with other CDs you've tried?
    Can you play music CDs?

If it does it will all your CDs I'd say it's time to replace.

it is a cd rom and it is manufacture installed.. it came with my comp i never had a problem with it i used to burn cds all the time... 2 months ago i formatted my comp.. and i used program cd's to reinstall software... it worked fine.. then i didnt use it like in a month and i just tried to instal some new software.. but it just wouldnt keep the cd in.. i tried a few other cd types and it did the same thing to all of them... if i have to replace it i guess im screwed cause i have no clue how to do that and a comp shop will charge and arm and a leg.

not sure if this will help, but if you can, get one of those cd lens cleaner disks and try and run it (it's a cd with a little brush on it to wipe off any dust on the lens). Also, make sure the drive still appears in 'My Computer'

Personally, I would stay clear of the cd lens cleaners as in my experience they do more harm then good. The brush on the cd can damage the lens on the cdrom's laser.

A much more effective and safer solution is to take the optical drive out, pop open the casing which is usually held in place with 4 screws and clean the lens with isopropyl alcohol.

I have had several optical drives which have failed in reading media and this usually works very well.

Also as has been mentioned before, cleaning the lens is recommended especially if it is a burned cd as opposed to a manufactured on as these are pressed.

    Good Luck

Cleaning would be the first thing I'd try
I use an Air compressor to blow away dust etc. then clean with 91% or higher Isopropyl alcohol

I use Isopropyl to clean all electronic/hardware etc.
Let it dry before ya plug stuff in;)
Dilute it with water by 50% & works great for cleaning LCD screens
Iso is like a $1 for 16oz bottle at local drug er discount store, air is free if ya have a compressor :p

When using air compressor one must be careful, too much pressure can Damage :major

If you don't have a compressor, One can buy little cans of compressed air, I'm sure it's over priced :D

So Give it a Good Blow Job roflmao
    than a Iso bath
    see what happens
sometimes these things just Die :mad
for $20-$30 one can buy Brand new/Brand name CD/DVD burner..................

Removing an optical device is very simple. The unit is held in place with 4 screws to the chassis of the pc case. There will be 2 cables to the remove a) the power molex and b) the data cable. That is it.

As to the cd-rom itself, the casing is held in place with 4 screws and once those are removed the top of the casing comes off. You will immediately be able to spot the laser.

It is not very difficult at all.

    Good luck
