it only shows up if i put a cd in then when i click on it nothing happens. I was told it could be a driver issue. If so where can i go to get the right ones?

heres what i got: its connected by itself, no jumper. it will show up if i go to places and click on computer. but it says Unable to mount locatio, no media in drive . there is media in the drive i put it in there. when i go to properties it says this:

    BASICS
    name: cd-rw drive
    type: unknown type (application/octet-stream)
    size: unknown
    loacation: computer:///
    volume: unknown
    accessed: unknown
    modified: unknown

    PERMISIONS

the permissions of "CD-RW Drive" could not be determined.

    maybe this will help?
    i am using 9.04 ubuntu

The first part about the drive only showing up on the Desktop if it has a disk in it is normal behavior for Ubuntu. You say in the quote below that you can see the drive in the "Computer" location if it has no disk in it. This is also expected behavior. Having Ubuntu do nothing when the disk is inserted is not unexpected, but I discuss that below.

That is the exact message I get when I do not have any media in the drive. I get the same information when I go to properties also.

When I put a disk in, all that changes to contain pertinent information about the disk.

What I think is happening is:
    1) You are putting in a blank disk and you are wanting to burn information to it. If this is the case, you need to use disk burning software such as Brasero
    2) The disk you are trying to use is scratched and Ubuntu is not able to read it. If you think this is the case, try another disk that is more likely to work (not very scratched) to verify the diagnosis. If this turns out to be the case, try taking the scratched up disk to a business that has disk buffing.

See where this gets you. If that still does not fix your problem, I will try to think of more :major

Alright the disc is ok. I installed a new program called rip off it actually read the disc and is now extracting it. but when i open places and try to open anything it tries and nothing opens. this happens whether the disc is on or not. And this happens if i put in any kind of disc. the drive works as i can use it to boot from a cd or reinstall an os
