CD/RW DVD Rom Not Recognized

512 MB Ram

2-fold problem
after "cleaning up" his computer, his sound stopped working.
AFter trying various things, I finally purchased a Sound Blaster audio card and installed it and the sound is working fine...

However, His CD/RW DVD drive is not even recognized in Windows Explorer and that's the one he burns music to CD's with.

He purchased a $50 RealPlayer burning software and tried to install it (with the other CD rom Drive) but it never worked. He then thought it was because of no sound. I'm thinking he was trying to burn with the only recognizable CD drive, but it wasn't the one that writes.

Belarc says:

but when I went into device manager it gives the following info:

_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A
not able to enable device
Driver Version 5.1.2535.0
7/1/2001

Any ideas on how to get the PC to recognize the DVD Rom Drive Again?

 

Have a look in the device manager & see if there are error codes associated with the cd rom.

 

XP always does this, and there is a registry hack, but that is last resort.

First try uninstalling the controller in question, rebooting and hopefully it should be detected.
