CdROM has gone inop. Device Manager reports corrupt driver

The SD-R2512 in my Toshiba M35 S-149 has gone inoperative. Device manager shows the following error: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" . Uninstalling and letting the device reinstall during rebooting does not cure. This happened once perviously & I reformatted & did a full reinstalled of Win XP (home) and everything was OK. During the last occurrance I swapped hard drives with a new machine and the problem followed the hard drive (this machine was now OK the new machine had the CD ROM problem) so I have determined it is some sort of conflict, although not reported as such.

Can the imbedded Windows driver be isolated and reinstalled? Is there any way to determine what could be causing the problem? I am at a totally different software installation level from the first occurance.

I have a similar problem (~Code 41). From other forums, I've seen that a driver may be mapping the IDE CD devices over to psuedo-SCSI drives (Device Manager shows the devices with the warning sysmbol and SCSI CDrom drive tacked on to the end of their description). I have had no success yet isolating the particular driver, although I have removed Roxio and other CD-burner software.
